I purchased the LaView 4 camera (two 4MP, two 2MP) SlickDeal on black friday for $279. (no hdd), so I've been getting their emails. Today, they sent out a 12 days of Christmas email, which listed this sale. This system has one 3TB HDD, but has the capacity for two 6TB hard drives. It comes with 10 - 4MP cameras, but is capable of 4K. I would have liked to have that on mine.

Having purchased an extra 2x 4MP HD Matrix IR IP Bullet Security Camera pack, plus two 4TB harddrives for mine, I'm 3/4 of the way to this price now.

To me, this is a good deal, considering what the cost of the 10 4MP cameras would be, but I admit I'm curious what other will think of it. I guess I'm about to find out.

I can say from the 4MP cameras that I received with mine, I've been able to easily read license plates on vehicles passing by. Identifying persons is easy, day or night. The images are extremely sharp during the day or night.

In my own tests, I drove by at 26 mph, which doesn't sound like much, but is probably faster than any vehicle would pass by on my curve, and I can read the license plates on both cameras for quiet a distance during the day. Keep in mind that I bought two 4TB drives and have these two cameras at full frame at the moment since I've only put up 4 cameras so far.

I cannot read the license plates at night, but I can easily make out the cars' makes and models. Also note that the 4MP cameras that I've got with the BF deal where LV-PB3140WC, where these are LV-PB3040W.

Good to see some deals for PoE systems around after the big BF-cyberweek deals.

FYI - to see license plates at night you will have to tune the camera - to the extent that all other aspects of the image will be too dark to be useful.. thus for license plate reading ( especially at night ) people dedicate one or more cameras to just do that job.

Thanks. I adjusted the image setting for Brightness, Contrast, and Saturation on both the NVR and through the LaViewNet software. If there is another place to adjust settings for to make this a dedicated camera, I'd like to try them. I got the image dark, but was only able to read the license plate at night when my car was stopped in the road (which is still an improvement over what I had). So I changed it back. I was wondering if an IR Illuminator would help or hurt. I jokingly said I was just going to put up a stop sign in front of my mailbox. Smilie

Hi Tex500,

There's an entire thread on ALPR ( automatic license plate reader ) at ipcamtalk, I have yet to really allocate one camera for this job - so I have only picked up the executive summary at this time on the topic.

Sometimes you have to directly access the IP camera to get access to all the parameters as the NVR interface may limit what you see.

One parameter which is important will be the shutter speed - you will need a faster shutter to prevent blur from motion.

An exterminal IR illuminator.. good question - I know license plates "glow" due to reflective paint on many.. I have to read more on that.

From what I saw, this deal is very similar to the BF Deals. Great price for a 4MP kit.Applause

Hi Enfo123,

Better? There were a lot of very good deals during BF-cyberweek all across different brands and various different options, from low PoE port count to massive 32 port kits.

A lot of determining what is "better" - is to really understand what your needs are.

This is a good deal in terms of pricing, and there are only a few deals available right now.

If you picked up a kit during BF-cyberweek you should at least bench test it and see how well it performs at your place in both daytime and night time views.

Remember, camera resolution is only one spec to a camera - and other qualities as well the ability to adjust settings can make a significant impact on image quality.

Thank you mat2000 for explaining.

I guess what I meant by 'better deal' is to compare to the deals laview had during BF, as I recalled seeing deals on similar products on BF.

Just dug into their newsletters and confirm they had identical SKU for BF doorbuster deal at @$949.

I am waiting for deals on 4K surveillance system but may end up getting those 4MP ones as price are a lot more comfortable for a 10-camera setup.

FYI - There was a 4K kit deal posted earlier, I've added the info to the end of the thread:

Has the Zoom, but not Pan / Tilt... That means no remote control of the cameras to adjust them. For me, that means getting out the ladder every time the 60 MPH wind tosses them.

I did see they offer PTZ cameras for $400 to $1000 each...

Hi Mitch22,

The cameras in this kit look like fixed lens cameras according to the spec sheet:
4mm@ F2.0, Angle of view: 83°

If you secure these properly they should remain fairly steady.

How often do you see 60mph winds?

Thanks for sharing OP!

Moved to a new condo a few months ago and was thinking about getting a security cam system like this. Missed the BF deals unfortunately Frown

Am still trying to decide if I need 4K cameras. Even this kit looks great for the price but I don't think I'll need 10x cameras.

Any of you have one of these LaView products and can vouch for the longevity?

Hi Mat,

The price is tempting, but I'll have to test their customer service. I'll have to get the real info on the -22 temp also, as it's normal to go below that here.

60mph is a few times a year, but 30 plus is common.

Hi Mitch22,

Perhaps a turret / eyeball style of camera will work better with strong winds?
