We had this done because my dog was having some health issues and it helped pinpoint what it was after we found out exactly what breeds we were dealing with. It maps out their family tree which is pretty neat. My dog's mom ended up being a full blood American Staffordshire Terrier who apparently had a wild night with a shih tzu/boxer/basset hound/lab mix! 😜

I used 2 of these kits last year for my dogs and they seemed accurate.

How much do I need to spend to find out if I'm a dog or cat person?

I did this through my Vet. Vet said "oh yeah, get this and when it comes back, we'll go over it".
Yeah right, that never happened.

Would I do it again? Yes, for 50 bucks but definitely not through my Vet! My dog said it's grand parents were Min Pin and Greyhound. She's mainly Havanese with the long legs.

I used an Embark DNA kit for my 15 year old Chow/German Shepard mix last year. I believe it's priced at $200, but they have coupon codes. It seemed to be very accurate for me. I bought it because her bro and sister died last year (raised all 3 since they were puppies) and it was sort of therapeutic to find out further about their family tree. Glad I did it.

I have no idea about this Mars test, reviews seem to be mixed. The price is so cheap too 😱 I guess for entertainment value it's ok even if results aren't completely accurate.

With Embark, my dog was mixed with Chow Chow completely on one side for several generations which was completely true. The other side was German Shepard, Siberian Husky, with super tiny percentages of Cocker Spaniel, and Shetland sheep dog. Which seemed to be really accurate.

It also checks for genetic diseases and updates as they add new diseases as well. I thought it was very well worth it, but I'm obsessed with my dogs and love them more than most people. 😂

If your dog can talk and already told you that his/her grandparents were Min Pin and Greyhound, then why need a DNA kit?
