Doesn't this require an ADT monthly fee?

It's optional but not required, I think it's $40/month if you want it to be monitored by ADT.

From what I'm reading it doesn't alert intrusions without the plan. Which basically makes it useless

No it does push alterts/alrms to the panel and app. They are saying it won't "report" to ADT.

If your house is already wired for an alarm system and you don't want to pay for a monitoring service I would highly suggest you look at this kickstarter [kickstarter.com]

Do you have any more thoughts on this (price, specific package, certainty that they will get the work done on time etc.)? I am wary of all the newer battery based WiFi sensors (for one you need to keep changing batteries, the list of which keeps increasing exponentially). The old wired systems take care of themselves in that respect. TIA

Read the full kickstarter page and I'm sure you'll get the confidence you need in this project. He already has 500 "beta" testers already using the product. If your house is already wired this project is a "no brainer" to fund.

Completely agree on the Konnected Alarm Panel. I have been a backer on this for quite a while. I've even got 4 personal friends or families to back this project. Can't wait to get this in my hands.

Btw: the wireless sensors motion, door and window sensors, I use, don't really go through batteries very quickly. I've had some door and window sensors installed for more than a year, and have not had to change batteries. The batteries in my motion sensors tend to last 6 to 12 months.

Read the kickstarter page carefully. It depends on the number of wired sensors you have. Each module supports 6 wired sensors so you need to divide the number wired sensors you have going into your existing alarm box by 6 plus 1. I have 15 going into mine so I purchased the 18 zone kit ($129).

Damn I just want the panel in this kit to integrate with my existing SmartThings/Scout alarm integration. Is that too much to ask for?

Well it does integrate with SmartThings but it's directly targeted at pre-existing wired alarm systems.
