they haven't "updated" in forever even with expanding technology and changes to their system. It's legit and a cheap DVR option

I'm a fan of PlayOn, but should point out that they are typically slow to add requested features [playon.tv], although they were quick to add DirecTV Now support.

PlayOn Cloud is also worth a look. [playon.tv] It's having a "End-Of-Year Blowout Sale [playon.tv]" on credits (1 per recordings).

Does this stand a chance of getting blocked by the subscription services? Seems like it would violate terms.

They would probably like to block it, but it's not clear how they would without blocking all Internet Explorer users.

OMG not this company again and their paid posts. Please search old play on posts and see why this company is a rip off.

Do you have a fast enough connection on a plain or a train/subway to stream in HD? With PlayOn you can copy your recordings to your mobile devices, including external storage and MicroSD cards (for Android), and they don't expire.

Also subscription services have rotating catalogs, so most content won't always be available. Content licensing deals have set expiration dates, even though they aren't typically advertised.

A third benefit is that for advertisement-supported services, including Hulu and CBS All Access, you can use Adskipper to automatically skip over commercial breaks.

Another use of PlayOn Desktop is to schedule recordings for the middle of the night or whenever else you don't plan on using your PC. Some people have buffering issues during primetime or have time periods that don't count towards their monthly data-cap, so recording at night can help with those issues.

"Paid posts"? Do you have any evidence of that? (Before you ask, I've never been employed by MediaMall nor otherwise paid by them.)

How many years has it been since any of their customers had that kind of problem with them?

Wasn't talking about you but the OP. New user just like many other Playon posts here. Want potential play on subscribers to look under deal talk and read the past reviews and posts. It isn't good.

You're recording/downloading content that is intended for streaming use only. If Netflix doesn't care, I bet the content owners would.

Still have my lifetime PlayOn license, and yes it is *still* active. I initially bought it as a Windows solution. That said, I have moved on to Plex and have never looked back. Wave

Yes, except for the Adskipper feature, PlayOn is very basic as a media server. So I usually use Plex to watch the content I've used PlayOn to record. I also use Plex to watch content I've copied from my Tablo DVR too.

Whether or not they are purposefully blocked I don't know but channels stop working very frequently. I stopped using it because it is not reliable enough. It is great when it works though.
