Mesh is the cool new hot word. As proven by smallnetbuilder a router and an AP are a better option. I would never spend $100 on a AC1750 anymore. Good to see someone else besides me has some common sense.

You're right about the specs, but for those for whom AC1750 is plenty, it's solid at $99

Got this for my parents's house, and the iOS app makes firmware updates etc much easier than trying to walk them thru the Netgear routerlogin.net interface. Also Amplifi/Ubiquiti were first with firmware solutions for the KRACK vulnerability.
