CPU Fan Issues

857 54 December 14, 2017 at 05:41 AM
So I've noticed lately when ever my computer goes into power save mode, my cpu fan will stop running completely. I have an Hyper Evo 212 Cooler fyi.

Going back to active mode, or restarting doesn't help. I usually have to either disconnect/reconnect the connector to the header on the mobo (Maximus Hero VII) or switch connections between the cpu opt header and cpu fan 1 header.

It will start REALLY slow and sometimes I even have to manually spin the fan to get it going again.

But once I get it going, the cpu fan will run just fine....until I go to bed for the night and the computer goes into power save mode. Then were back to square one.

Is this a cpu fan issue or a header issue or a BIOS setting? I've tried messing w/ my bios and disabling PWM mode but nothing seems to be a long term fix ConfusedConfused

All help is greatly appreciated

Switch the CPU fan with a case fan and see if the problem moves. Also, try updating to the latest released BIOS - https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboa...Desk_BIOS/

When you restart the PC after the fan has stopped, go into the BIOS and see what RPM is being reported. That might point you towards the fan or motherboard when tested in conjunction with the above suggestion.

After restart no RPM is being reported due to the stoppage. Just states "n/a"

Sounds like a bad fan. If you have to help get it started, it is most likely trash.

What happened when you tried switching the connections of the CPU fan with a chassis fan?

212 continued to sputter...other fans worked fine on both cpu opt and cpu fan 1.....looks like the fan is just dieing.

Would you guys suggest just replacing the fan or the entire 212 cooler unit? Do they even sell the 212 fans by themself?

Sucks but definitely better then a bad header or messing with the BIOS. Final question...should i still get the latest bio drivers or is it worth the hastle at this point?

Don't bother with BIOS upgrade. You should be able to take the brackets off the fan and install another 120mm fan, no need to change the cooler or buy a specific fan.

EDIT: Or you can buy the exact fan - http://www.cmstore-usa.com/hyper-...m-package/

Warranty period is 2 years. Are you still within that window?

Or just buy another fan and use this method - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QjYrdZgx20I

This fan will work fine, if you don't mind the blue LED nonsense: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Pr...6835103060
