If it helps anyone, this received an update to Android 7 (Nougat) back in March, but isn't scheduled to receive Android 8 (Oreo). However, it is slated to continue to receive security updates. I bought a couple of these for my parents as a Christmas gift.

If you can spend a little more, the G4 Plus (on sale, see SD post) is scheduled to receive an update to Oreo.

I got this last week (16GB) version. I was replacing a broken LG G3 and refurbished Galaxy S5 that still works okay.

I use my phone a lot, and I think this is going to be my spare phone, while I look for an older flagship for my daily driver.

It's got great software - no bloat, vanilla Android, probably rootable and able to use Lineage.

But it is definitely a budget phone - cheaper plastic, the 2GB of ram is limiting, and no NFC or fingerprint.

But for $100 or so, still a great deal for light users or as a spare. I'm on ATT and had no sim troubles.

How do you activate the "6 Months Free Republic Wireless Service "? The carrier app on the phone asks for my credit card info and appears to be charging me at full rate from day one of activation.

Other threads on the republic sim indicate that the discounted price shows up on the final screen.

What do you mean "not reading the SIM card"? Are you using a Republic SIM that comes with the phone or a T-Mo SIM?

T-Mobile sim. When I insert it, it tells me that there's no SIM card in

I'm betting it's locked to Republic. Call and check.
