Mixed reviews. Half saying good things. The other half drives dies in a few months. Good price though

If they're newer production it's an ST8000DM04-2CX188

The drive is a 5400rpm Barracuda Compute.

There are conflicting claims that this is a pin SMR drive but I don't believe it is, the drive is rather quick and uses some sort of other writing according to the data sheet I found.

FWIW it's cooler and quieter than the WD Easystore which uses 8TB WD red. This may or may not make a difference to you.

I bought a Seagate like this between the WD sales at Best Buy because I was just loading movies and tv show box sets on it for easy viewing in my bedroom and I really didn't care what kind of drive it was, it gets used nightly and has worked perfectly well.

Seagate rates the use as a consumer drive in the data sheet Seatools says otherwise. My guess is they're just lower spin rate versions of the 7200rpm ST8000DM0004.

Older stock has the SMR Archive HDD ST8000A002, newer stock may have Barracuda Pros ST8000DM004 (enterprise rated)

This can easily be confirmed due with hard disk sentinel.

Mine was October build date indications are they may have started switching in late July so from what I've read so hopefully by now have switched over to newer stock, I know Amazon was shipping newer ones. Cache size on the Barracudas is 256MB vs 128MB on the archives.

Thanks to all for the info. So assuming they turn out to be Barracuda Pros, this would end up being a better deal than the WD Reds?

Honestly a lot of it is personal preference really, just depends on the brand you prefer.

I guess I'm too late, code doesn't work now. I need a 8TB drive and I like Newegg since they don't charge tax for me like all the other stores.

Hahaha. Those Easystores were $10 less and both Seagate and the Reds have the reputations they do, for a reason.
