Much like many companies, when Newegg was new they really seriously competed on price AND customer service.... Once they gain significant customer base, market share and sales volume in the PC/electronics space online, they slowly start walking back those things. Prices become kinda mediocre and it's 10x more common to find the same price elsewhere as at newegg than it used to be. Customer service goes down and becomes mediocre or subpar like every other online outlet. Etc.

The only place Newegg really shines anymore is in selection and being PC/Electronics 'focused'. It used to be I was hard pressed to find a better deal on PC components than at Newegg, now I can almost always find the same price or slightly better at Amazon if they carry the same component. It used to be that Newegg had the best CS around, and would bend over backwards to make something right and make the customer happy (especially after they ordered 1k+ worth of components in one go). Now it seems as though they don't really care about going out of their way, and might even not help you out at all - they might just shunt you to the MFG and wash their hands of it like this.

In my experience Newegg has had great customer service and while their normal prices are average(at best) when things go on sale or with promo codes prices can be quite good(lots of Newegg items make it to SD frontpage).

Newegg on EBay is pretty notorious for that no returns nonsense, and with any reasonably expensive thing, it introduces a huge element of doubt. The main web site has actually expanded its returns policy for the holidays, with most returnable items being returnable until 1/31/18.

I have a personal horror story about Newegg's returns policy, though. Back before they posted the returns policy on the shopping cart itself, it was really easy to have a no-returns item "sneak up" on you. Often, if there were 5 variants of an item, 4 of them would allow returns and 1 wouldn't, with seemingly no rhyme or reason. The problem is that every time you switch variants (colors, specs) of an item, it resets to the description page and hides the Warranty & Returns tab.

I bought an unlocked smartphone from them, and it turned out that two of the phone's colors had a full 30-day return policy, but the color I chose was "no returns" (yes, the returns policy changed by color). I had actually checked this when I first looked at the phone, but I had no idea it was even reasonable to expect different return policies for different colors. When something went wrong with the phone, they abjectly refused to even consider a return. I waded through a huge amount of broken english and unsupportive reps, and in the end even their supervisor teams wouldn't budge.

That kind of thing, to me, is an "easy win" situation for a company like that, and the fact that they fought it as hard as they did is something that gives me pause every time I think about shopping there.

Ebay and Paypal both force sellers to accept returns even if the seller has a no return policy. I wonder if they enforce this policy on Newegg?

Wondering if they don't accept returns because some items are drop-ship (e.g. - they never actually owned the inventory in the first place)? I ordered an HP Elitebook from Newegg last March and the machine I received was shipped direct from an HP factory from China. If one were to return the laptop to Newegg, then Newegg would theoretically have to come up with funds to pay the customer for the return (because the money paid by customer for the purchase would've already been remitted to HP to make the dropship happen).

Love newegg. Buy a lot of stuff there these days especially via ebay.
Nice to see some stuff being thrown in with the new console these days.

I'm gonna return my Xbox one x to Best Buy since it's still in the return period if they don't throw me a copy of PUBG for free.

Yeah that was a great reason for me in the past, plus I often could find deals. Sadly in PA, Newegg has to collect taxes now, just started this month, so that stinks. They did offer a 10% off coupon, but I used it to buy some wiper blades - it was only effectively a 4% coupon as PA has 6% tax.
