You can get three months of Amazon FreeTime Unlimited for $0.99 by following the steps below. This beats the $2.99 deal that they are heavily promoting on their website.
  1. Visit the product page for any of the regular edition Kindle Fire Tablets [amazon.com](not the kids editions).
  2. On the right side of the page, beneath "add to cart" button there is an "Add Additional Items" list. Check the box for 3 months Amazon FreeTime Unlimited for $0.99.
  3. Add the Kindle Fire with subscription to your cart.
  4. Go to your cart and the Kindle Fire and FreeTime subscription are listed as separate items.
  5. Delete the Kindle Fire and check out with just the $0.99 subscription.

I did this last week in order use the subscription on Amazon Warehouse refurbished Kindle Fire. Worked absolutely fine and I created my own kids edition for less than half of the currently heavily discounted price (should work out to about $60 for the whole year including a generic kid-proof case). Doesn't come with a warranty, but that's worth it at this price. My kid loves it.

Note: This doesn't seem to appear for some accounts. I only see it when I'm logged into my account. Weird thing is I can still see it even though I bought it last week (I can add it to my cart, but it doesn't let me check out a second time because I have an active subscription).

Update: I chatted with Amazon to determine what happens when subscription runs out. Apparently, you are automatically renewed onto the month-to-month plan. Price depends on how many kids you have and whether you have a prime account. month-to-month pricing. [amazon.com]. If you have Prime, One child = $2.99 per month, multiple children = $6.99 per month. If you don't have Prime, One child =$6.99/month, multiple children =$9.99 per month.

This is still a good deal, especially if you have one kid and Prime like me (I'll pay $27.90 for the whole year). But it's very sketchy that they don't tell you this anywhere, unless you chat with them. I can't figure out any way to manage this, prevent it, or unsubscribe. So if you don't want this, set up a calendar reminder to cancel in 3 months.

I did not see this option in the additional items and have never heard of FreeTime so I searched it on Amazon. One year plan is currently on sale for $49 prime and $71 nonprime. Too bad I don't have the compatible devices listed.

While the better pricing is $2.99 per month, I also could not find a way to duplicate the OPs offer

I take it the instructions are on PC only. I'm trying this from the Amazon App and Freetime is not an "additional item". All I see are other options like a case, warranty, etc.

My current free time subscription ends next month. And I don't see free time as additional item. I suppose this is only for new subscribers.

Be careful with this. I was checking over my statements and noticed a Free Time Unlimited monthly charge even though we haven't had it for a year. The agent wouldn't/couldn't tell me why I was charged a month of it even though I had no subscription and did not sign up for a new subscription.

Just got it. Above instructions worked. We'll see if I like it or not. For 99 cents, it's worth a try for 3 months.

I tried this through the Amazon mobile site, Amazon desktop site, and the Amazon app. I don't see this deal anywhere. Maybe it's targeted to specific accounts. Since it has its own listing in the cart, it should have its own item page when you click on it from the cart; could someone share that link?

I just did it, thanks OP. However, I noticed that if not logged in to my account, that add-on offer does not show up. I'm a Prime member and already had a Fire tablet, not sure if either of those was critical once I logged in.

There is a link, but for me it goes to a page that thanks me for being a Kindle Unlimited customer - may show differently for folks but I think it's just a generic KU page:

Thanks for sharing the link. That takes me to a generic page that talks about the Freetime Unlimited program and gives me a 1-month free trial, but I'd rather pay 99¢ for 3 months.
