I guess it depends what's more important to you.
If form factor is the most important, then the Mini4 obviously wins in size, thickness, and weight.
If performance is the most important, then the iPad wins; it has the newer A9 chip while the Mini4 has the A8 chip resulting in faster CPU and GPU.

It should also be noted that the iPad here is 32GB while the Mini4 is 128GB but then the iPad is $50 cheaper in this deal.

If it was for me, I'd be returning the Mini4 and get the iPad (more performance, cheaper, don't need all that storage) but it's for my daughter and form factor is the most important so guess I'll keep the Mini4.

Yes, but keep in mind this iPad was a downgrade from the previous version iPad Air 2. This was done to lower the entry level price point so that Apple could have more market penetration to the masses. It is thicker, heavier, has a chip from 2015, no anti glare coating on the screen and a few other cost cutting "features".

Just wanted to clarify because most people are used to getting more, thinner, lighter, better performance when upgrading to the latest Apple device.

Thanks OP! Question for any of the iPad experts. Outside of the screen size, would this or the Target Mini ($299) deal a couple of weeks a go be a better device?

This is the better option because it has a newer/faster processor.
