Why did they discontinue Series 2 and not Series 1?

The names are based on the feature tier, not the order of release. Series 1 features are still as planned and not outdated, while Series 2 was directly upgraded by many expensive improvements for Series 3.

It's a strategic business move.

With launch of Apple Watch Series 3, company gave its customers few incremental upgrades including cellular option from the previous model Series 2.

There was not much of a difference in both apart from the celluar, LTE and new chip options and they almost came at the same price range. So, Apple silently killed series 2 to promote their latest launch series 3 while they have kept there Series 1 as the entry model with a great price variance as compared to Series 3 for people who find Series 3 too costly but still want to try an Apple Watch.

Hence, considering all the price points, incremental upgrades and promotion of new Series 3, killing of Series 2 'silently' made sense.
