Would anyone recommend this for a non-smart phone user? Would like to just have the multimedia capabilities (for offline content naturally).

Buy prepaid phone but don't activate it. Put it in airplane mode and enable Wifi. Use it as tablet. You can get much better deal since it is subsided by carrier.

Am I required to have a carrier to be able to even use this Sony Xperia (I'm part of a 'family plan' but don't use data for my current non-smart phone)? I don't think I'll opt out my plan anytime soon but want something better than a flip-phone.

Prepaid phone alone sounds nice for just a simple mini tablet (multimedia device) I guess.

Depends on which carrier your family plan is on. If ATT or T-Mobile this phone will work. 5" is small for Netflix or even reading though.
Deleted last part.

Good for a dumb phone user, too. Us gen exers pretend to be tech literate, but we really only use AOL and Facebook, SD, and Amazon. Stick Out Tongue

All while lugging around a laptop/netbook hoping a hotspot is nearby.

What is "MediaTek Helio P20"?
What does it compare to in terms of snapdragon?

Also,
$200 for 720p phone?
1280 x 720
Gorilla Glass 1
IPS Display not AMOLED (if you want brighter colors, AMOLED)

On the plus side, only 3GB.

I guess Moto G5 Plus is a better deal at $180'ish? It's Full HD I believe?

Can anyone explain me what's good about this? I'm getting one for my younger brother and I just bought Moto g5 from Costco $180. For me the Moto specs kinda surpassed this Sony. Maybe I missed something here.
