Some features worth mentioning:
  • 36.4MP AA Filter-less CMOS Sensor w/ 33 AF Points; SR Shake Reduction w/ Pixel Shift Resolution System APS-C Crop Mode for backward compatibility with PENTAX APS-C Lenses
  • GPS/Electronic Compass/Astro Tracer (sensor moves with rotation of the earth for longer shutter speeds without getting star trails)
  • Cross-tilt LCD display. Weather-resistant body
  • 1080/60i video; Focus peaking in video mode will assist with manual focusing..LED illuminated body points
  • Weight:32.6 oz

Pixel shift, if your shot does not have motion in it, results in image sharpness and improved color depth that rivals, if not bests, the Nikon D850 and even challenges medium format cameras. It does require a tripod and the file sizes are 150mb+, but it's amazing.

Weather sealing on this thing is super solid as all Pentax WR cameras. I've taken Pentax cams in downpours for more than an hour with no issues (must use a suitable lens - the DFA* lenses have the best WR)

Optical viewfinder - lots of debate on which is better, optical or electric, but I prefer the naturalness of an Optical viewfinder. It's not a flashlight ruining my night vision shining in my eye and it doesn't have a delay or issues dealing with motion in low low light. Also less grainy imo.

Image stabilization on ALL lenses even lenses that are 40 years old. I use many of the Super Takumars and they are awesome on this camera. Easy to meter and you can still use focus peaking for critical focus. Some old lenses require a flange adapter which runs about $30 for the Pentax version which is best for infinity focus.

Tilt / Swivel screen - this screen is a bit ridiculous (in a good way). There's lights on the back of the screen to illuminate buttons. It's super strong - I've held my camera by the screen with no issues. Fully adjustable in ways most tilt screens are not. Also keeps the screen on axis with the lens so you don't get that rangefinder effect...

Built in GPS with compass. Also tells you if you have the cam tilted side to side or pitched forward. Awesome for architectural photography. AND... you can have the cam automatically correct for a crooked camera with horizon correction. Freaking awesome.

There's a ton more features, but bottom line, this is a screaming deal on a great camera.

Pentax/ Ricoh North America has been not so great at marketing this camera since it came out in April 2016. I mean, a Nikon D810 sensor but without the AA filter, add 5 axis stabilization that allows you to do things like Astrotracer, Auto Horizon Correction, AA filter simulation for when moire could be a problem (like fabrics during a wedding shoot), and Pixel Shift - I mean this camera is a beast. But they sell better in other markets than the US so maybe that's the deal? Personally, I think it's that Pentax marketing is old fashioned and they don't know how to do modern marketing with social media and all that.

Anyways, here's a decent article about what makes the Pentax K-1 unique:

Thanks, it's a nice place to be.

But a little wet this time of year so that's why good weather sealing is a must for me. And WR lenses that don't cost a ton either like the very good DFA28-105.

Wish there was a 20% off deal on the Pentax 3-II. I have some great old Pentax lenses, but need a new body, the 3-II has been on my list for a while.

So... Amazon is running the same deal on the Pentax KP which has the same sensor as the k3ii, but it adds an improved 5 axis stabilization and a tilty screen as well as a 3rd control wheel. This model has interchangeable grips so if you want to go with a small cam or if you need a larger grip for larger lenses, you have that choice.

Right now, the silver version of the KP is $870 while the black versin is $900. So 20% off of either is either $700 or $720.
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MYAE...UTF8&psc=1

This is what I just bought since I already have the K-1. It's nice having a smaller body but the k1 got me used to having a tilty screen and I for sure want pixel shift as the image quality is improved a ton when it can be used.

But the KP has a smaller buffer and the ergonomics probably aren't as good. Plus, the k3ii has gps built in. Also battery life in the k3ii will be more than the KP. Pick your fave based on these priorities.

B&H has the k3ii with the grip basically given for free for $836. So if you do event or portrait photography, this could be a good deal for you.
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/pr...amera.html

Usually the grip is $200+...

Nice having choices Smilie

Damm, your are making this difficult with it being do close to Christmas. I am sticking with the K3-II for the GPS and the Astro photography options.

I'll checkout the B&H deal, but it's a tough time of the year for new toys, this was on my tax return list :-)

Oh, you will for sure be able to get stunning photographs with the 80d. Great camera with much better video capabilities than Pentax.

You'll find most of the pics on my Flickr page are from aps-c cams and even a lot of cell phone pics. Larger sensors give you a bit more latitude when the light goes down because the extra dynamic range allows you to lift the shadows without getting too much static/ noise. So for the scenes at the coast where there's a sunset but you also want to get detail in the rock formations, this extra dynamic range is really important so a larger aps-c or full frame will help you a lot. Of course not all sensors react to this kind of scene as well as others, but for the most part, modern sensors are really flexible.

Hope you get a lot of good shots with your cam! Is this your first interchangeable camera? If so, be patient as there's quite a learning curve... but the rewards can be awesome.

Really nice images Vagrant! The K1 has earned lots of praises and quite a few pro's are now shooting with it. Since there has been been lots of talk on a new K2 release, this may be why the discount. I shoot a K3 and recently added the K70 and since a kayaker and hiker, the WP gear is great. I go back to the early 70's with my first Pentax, the ME Super which is still in use today, I call it the tank.

A bit of K1 and Pentax history from Jonathan Gorse who I follow:

Nice, I'll give that a read later tonight. I've been hoping for a k70 deal but with what they were offering the KP for, I decided to bite on that. For an extra $100, it seemed reasonable to step up. Also want to reward the companies for giving a discount on Pentax stuff Smilie

How are you liking the K70? For $599, it's an amazing camera. Pixel shift, fully articulating screen, pentaprism, weather sealed, compact but typical Pentax rugged build.

Perhaps the K-1 needs an update, but I think they need a new APS-C flagship above the K3ii so they can integrate the 5 axis SR into it. It's strange the KP has some better specs..
