Where is the best place to buy quality casual dress socks?

2,421 829 December 19, 2017 at 11:02 AM
I see some socks for $2 a pair, some for $12 and some for even higher. Any tips on where I should be getting quality socks that will last a while and not cost a fortune?

For what it is worth, I have found most socks are garbage these days and while some may last longer than others, most of the usual fare will get holes or shed lint fairly quickly. Just not worth wasting the money on the endless cycle of buy, wear out quickly, get annoyed your socks have holes or are shedding, replace imo.

I recently paid for some Darn Tough socks which are expensive (12-17 dollars a pair), but have a lifetime replacement guarantee. Have not had any issues with them so far and they are just great imo. Can't speak to the ease of their return policy as I have not had an occasion to use it obviously, but anything is better than spending endlessly on socks and constantly replacing them. If you can afford it, buy a pair or two and try them out as if they work for you, you will never have to buy another pair of socks again. GoBros.com has them on sale frequently.

Their socks look like they are all meant for hiking and other activities. None look like casual dress socks.

Building on this, go with a merino wool. Farm to feet, smart wool, etc. for best price watch REI. You can get 20-22 dollar socks for 8-9 bucks. They DONT pick up odor so I wear a pair for 2-4 days at a time.

I'm understanding casual dress socks as wear to work (office environment) socks

I would suggest material over location but I've had success in the past with "discount" stores like DSW, Century 21, TJ Maxx, Marshall's etc.

Brands: I've had good success with Calvin Klein and DKNY from DSW in the past, picked up CK again from Century 21 and so far so good.

Cost: Give or take $2 a pair, opted for striped which had a bonus pair obviously YMMV

Back to material you want to look for mercerized cotton or combed cotton and here's a link for further research about the materials

Basically cotton is cost effective year round and wicks away moisture (less stinky) and I'm wearing a pair of Calvin Klein combed cotton socks (80-90% combed cotton) in Northeast winter (10 degrees fahrenheit)

The higher the percentage of cotton the better same goes for wool if you go for that option, merino wool is thinner than traditional wool yet comparably as warm to standard wool.

black gold toe. costco.
reasoning is that its easier to replace and match after doing laundry. buy a 12 pack. use them for about 2 years. replace all 12 in 2 years with a new set of 12. they all age and fade at the same rate. easy to match after laundry. missing socks can just be matched with another missing pair.

additionally, its a pretty standard find at costco and you can always find more at any location at any time.

I know it's a few weeks old, but I like Uniqlo socks. If you go to their site and into mens socks, scroll down to the "anti-odor color socks". They're $2.90 or 4 for $9.90.

I have some from just over 3 years ago that are starting to wear through. I'd say that's pretty good for the price and they have a ton of colors to choose from.
