How do these compare to the easy store for $10 less? I like the option of colors so I'm leaning towards these. Want to get 5

Does this work well for Xbox one expansion or is there something better at this price point?

If you have chase then can use chasepay in BestBuy store for 10% cashback and negate the tax and it will be almost same price. Chasepay offer is only till 12/24

Could this be hooked directly to a router, then accessed through wifi?

Best Buy 4Tb $89
First of all that's link is for a large external AC-powered drive, not a small & portable USB-powered drive.

Second, that drive is an 'EasyStore' which is the Best Buy-only variation of WD's Essentials line (cheaper, lower quality). The Passport series products have better drives and last longer. Every Essentials drive I've ever had has died within a year, yet I still have 10 year old Passports that work fine.

Depends on the router, but if it offers USB storage function then likely yes.

I was actually thinking modem, because the modem has a USB and an ethernet port, but I can't think of a way to hook a hard drive to the router because the router only has ethernet ports.

Unfortunately the USB ports on broadband modems are only for Internet data, not hosting devices. One relatively inexpensive router option that can act as a USB host for drives and printers is the Asus AC-68 (and the T-Mobile variant). It's been on Slickdeals several times for around $50 and is an outstanding router.
