Not really in the market for headphones at the moment but if someone is looking for an open back headphone this a fantastic deal.

it is probably ok for own use. no resale value for this headphone.
No resale value? This is very close to the HD660S but with a smaller driver made by Sennheiser in Ireland.

I've already joined the drop and wanted to summarize what people who've reviewed it are saying.

This is more energetic sounding than the HD650, but not overly bright. It has slightly less micro detail and the bass rolls off earlier though Massdrop did request that Sennheiser bumps the bass up. It responds to boosts in EQ. Also, at 150 ohms, this is an easy headphone to drive.

The HD6XX may end up as a better headphone. This one will still sound very good from a portable device and uses current driver technology.

Eh, still the HD6xx will sell easy if you want out. These are going to take a bigger hit on the used market.

The HD650 variants are flooding the market so hard to say how long that resale will remain. There's even a chance these headphones could increase in price. I'm hoping they decide to do something to get more bass here.

How do these compared to the 598? Or they should be compared with the 600/650 instead?

The 598 and 600, I believe, are identical sound-wise. Only a few people have heard these headphones being posted.

They're more closely similar to the HD660S but with less bass impact (those are $500 headphones currently). The drivers here are from the 700/660S lineage. The sound from the headphone was modeled to be closer to the 600. So less bassy 600 is what they seem like given the test models out there. That could change with production.
Thanks! I did a quick search on the 58x versus the 598i have and couldn't find much. Didn't realize there's a 660. I guess these are in a different league than my 598 then!

These are not related to 598 at all. In my opinion anyone buying these is taking a huge gamble since the model is new from scratch

I wonder if they're related to older hd580 which had same core component as hd600

I disagree since experienced people with full measurements have thoroughly reviewed them. I would say the question really should be, why buy over the HD6XX?

From Sennheiser:

"The HD 58X Jubilee is really the entry to the HD 6 series of headphones, and should present itself as a more refined headphone than the HD 598.
Historically, the limited edition HD 580 Jubilee was so well liked that we brought the same sound signature into continuous production as the HD 600. When the new headphones ship early 2018, it will be the 25th anniversary of the headphone that started the HD 6 series!
Sonically, the HD 58X Jubilee will mix some of the "DNA" characteristics of the HD 600, 650, and 660 S, but in a new affordable easier to drive package that provides a great entry into the series above the HD 598. It is also physically larger than the HD 598, so the HD 58X Jubilee will serve more as a "transportable" open headphone rather than an "on the go" portable headphone, so in some use cases (the office? Hotel?) you may prefer to bring your HD 598. Although it will arrive in 2018, the HD 58X Jubilee will also make a great "Gift" Headphone to start someone on high quality audio."

and:

"These HD 58X Jubilee are a mix of DNA from the original HD 580 Jubilee (which were a limited run until we released the HD 600 with the same sound signature), the HD 650, and the treble extension of the HD 660 S. So, they are not a direct rebrand of an existing model, but a new member of the family. When these are delivered early 2018, it will be the 25 anniversary since the launch of the HD 580 Jubilee, which set the stage for Axel Grell's contributions and the HD 6 series line!"

Agreed. The 598 and 600 are very different. Both are great in their respective ways though. I own both, along with 598cs and 800S

My bad, must have been confusing 580 and 598. Did not own any 500 series headphone.
