Only if the game requires more then 3gb of vram. Look at the game you want to play and see requirements. Otherwise they're more or less the same. if it uses more the fame should run terribly and you need to turn down graphics.

was gonna buy this but checked specs on GTX 970 I bought 4 years ago and they are pretty close. Whatever happened to Moore's law?

Most of the improvement this round seems to have gone to power efficiency. Also, crypto currency mining increased demand, so these cards sell near retail still long after their release. Also compare 970 to 1070 rather than 1060.
