My experience - I have 2 BYOD plans, went to Bestbuy to add 2 more lines with this LG G6 offer. During the activation process, their system gave unknown error and he had to call Sprint to activate the 2 lines. Sprint activated 2 lines, however Bestbuy could not complete there transaction, and ended up cancelling my 2 activated new lines by calling Sprint again.
Then he restarted the process again, and was able to successfully add two lines and gave me 2 LG G6. I paid taxes with monthly billing installment of $4.99. Checked if its a contract or I can pay off whenever I want and he said, no contract and I can pay off whenever I want.
Went home, logged into my account and to my surprise found two $119.76 charges as 'Immediate Charges Accrued' and my total due is some $242.49 . I called SPRINT as I was on BI for the two new lines and why are there accrued charges? They have put a case for the back office to look into and asked me to check after 2-3 business days. I was upset.
I then went back to the Bestbuy and spoke to the same rep. who said there shouldn't any charges. I showed him my account and he called Sprint and figured out that my 2 lines which were cancelled, the installment plans were not cancelled, and now I need to call a special number to get this removed. Hope they resolve this and remove the charges.
As for the deal, yes, its NOT contract, its BI contract which you can always payoff an I did successfully paid off my both lines. Waiting to port off.

Could one hypothetically get a placeholder phone for the Sprint BYOD promo then swap the device w this after paying off and cancelling the G6 line?

Yes, its easier done if both on same account. Make sure you get BYOD going first, as you won't qualify otherwise.

Check out the "Sprint free year BYOD" thread, the last big G6 thread, or the Sprint Essential $5/mo thread for a ton of info.

There is no contract. You can pay off the phone anytime. Payoff amount is $120.
