Canon VIXIA HF R70 Full HD Camcorder Refurbished for $120 + Tax. Free Shipping.

For those who missed the HF R800 for $139 at Fry's or $136 at Adorama via Rakuten deal, this is a similar deal, though refurbished instead of new. It also comes with a 1 year warranty from Canon.

The R70 and R800 are basically the same camcorder, with just few differences.

The R70 is the previous model of the new R80. Both are a step up from the basic R700 and R800 by the addition of 16GB of internal memory and some Wifi capabilities. However, the older R70 allows recording in either AVCHD or MP4 format, whereas the newer 80's series doesn't. They only allow recording in MP4. AVCHD is good because it allows you to record longer videos without the video being broken up into multiple files, as it is in high quality MP4 mode if you record more than about 10-15 min. Then you'll have to stitch the individual files together in a video editor to create one single file. Also, it is claimed that AVCHD produces higher quality video than MP4 with this camcorder.

Though the R800 lacks the internal memory, Wifi and AVCHD capability of the R70, Canon added a couple of new features to the 80's series. Canon says they now have more fast and slow motion flexibility and claims there is an improvement in Highlight Priority mode, so that backlighted objects are recorded better, with the highlights in the background being recorded more accurately and not being blown out.

It's an individual preference whether AVCHD recording or the new features are more important.

If you buy now until Dec. 31 and change your mind and don't open the box or the item is defective, you can get an RMA by Jan. 11 and return it for a full refund. Canon will even provide a prepaid return shipping label.

I'd highly recommend this camcorder at this price. I shot sports at 1080p 60fps and it does a good job. I don't think it can be beat for the price.

Here's an example

Got it but also bought the Sony HDRCX405. Can't keep both. If anyone can provide pros/cons of one over the other lemme know.

I don't need mic input as I use a portable digital recorder. Can live without having a touchscreen.

Keep hearing Sony is better in low light.

If you're trying to flesh out an early 2000s costume it works great.

I am thinking the same. I still use our mini dv camcorder at holidays and was considering this because the ease to transfer to computer. After looking at my Note 8 specs, I may already have a better option for this purpose.

It has a 32x optical zoom which operates very smoothly, and I believe you can control how fast it zooms in or out by how much you push the control. It also has excellent image stabilization throughout the zoom range. In addition it has a movable LCD screen so you could, for instance, hold it over your head to record over a crowd and be able to see exactly what you're recording.

Most phones have at most a 3X optical zoom, while this camcorder has at least 10 times that. You can't always record video from close up.

they are a little better for long events like a kids' performance or a sports game as someone said. however, the quality isn't as good as a modern phone, but you trade that off for the high optical zoom.

One reason I am considering this is for travel. You do not want to bring a 1k phone in some areas of the world. If they steal this... I would care less.

Any recommendations for an external mic to use with this? Clients have had earlier models of this, but while the video is good for interviews, if there is any ambient sound, like an AC, that gets picked up. Thanks
