How does this compare to the 656 (recent B.B. deal for $250)?

Nr656 is an older model but more powerful. And no longer available. That was a pretty crazy deal. This is a great price for the NR575 though.

Would be interested to know if Onkyos still have board and HDMI issues.

I bought this at Fry's for this price a couple weeks ago. I don't appreciate that they are all hush hush about the price on these. Give you some excuse that the manufacture doesn't like them to sell these for such insanely low prices. Sure. I get that from the used car salesman down the street.

As for the receiver. I don't love it. I read all the reviews, and it would seem that for all receivers, unless they blow up and cause the reviewer's house to burn down, the reviewers are going to give the receiver 5 stars and a ton of praise. Didn't help. For me... I like the simplified remote. The onscreen menus were fine. For the most part, simple text, no fancy graphics. ARC and CEC functionality was just about as hit and miss as everybody else's implementation. By default, if a signal is detected (bluetooth, or TV, or airplay, etc) the receiver may switch to it. Led to my wife watching TV, and receiver kept switching over to bluetooth every 1 minute until i disabled my phone's BT. wtf.

As for sound... I'm going to return it for this very reason. I have it hooked up to some Klipsch Quintet speakers. It sounds great most of the time, but when i watched an action movie and a bunch of guns were going off and sound fx and music, it didn't do well. Some guns could barely be heard, larger sound effects sometimes gave a "sucking" feeling like it it almost played loud and big but failed. Those quintets are rated at 50-75 watts and 8 Ohm. The volume was set to louder than average but not 100% or anything close. Comfortably loud.

Opinions are varied on that. Some say it's limited to older models and Onkyo stands behind them if they fail unlike the others. Others (many) won't touch it because of this issue.

I bought a NR656 from Best Buy open box for less that $250. 2 year warranty + 2 years using a Citibank card. Worst case scenario, I can use that. I might buy an extended warranty for $30 from BB so I can just take it in instead of shipping it in if things break. That's why I'm avoiding buying from online retailers.

I'm new to this receiver thingy so don't have an opinion on sound quality. Sounds good to me. If you are the picky kind you'll need to spend way more I suppose to get the quality you seek.
