Isn't this the same smoker Walmart had for $99 on Black Friday and clearance for as low as $49?

Just a word of warning - don't let the control panel sit in direct sunlight for too long.. keep it under the shade or throw something over it if its in direct sunlight.. the plastic on the control panel quickly deteriorated and broke apart on mine after sitting in the sun for too long. I even kept it in the garage when it wasn't in use.

Yes, Walmart had a very similar model on sale for $50. Only difference was a pewter colored door.

I have checked reviews on this model and either is great OR lots of controller issues. A guy in MN had an issue not working in 40deg weather. They advised him to warm the controller with a hair dryer! Hmmmm... I am in WI so not really better. No smoking meats from Nov.-April??
Same here on HDs site - not see this clearance price. I nearly pulled trigger elsewhere yday that had for $129 but concerned on reliability.

I am in Minnesota and I have a similar (or same?) masterbuilt model. It's a great unit and I've smoked in negative temperatures outside. Heat can be uneven but I crank it up and monitor with a digital thermometer.

I use this one:
https://www.amazon.com/Maverick-Redi-Chek-BBQ-Thermometer-Set/dp/B009ITJT92/ref=sr_1_23?ie=UTF8&qid=1514516986&sr=8-23&keywords=bbq+thermometer

This unit works best with this cold smoker attachment:

https://www.amazon.com/Masterbuilt-20070112-Smoking-Digital-Smokers/dp/B008DF6WWE/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1514516841&sr=8-2&keywords=masterbuilt+cold+smoker+attachment

Adding the cold smoker attachment really simplifies the process since it lasts 6 hours or so. Otherwise you are putting in wood chips constantly.

The stand is also really useful if you are going to move this around when not in use:

Too complicated. I have a Brinkmann's that I have been using for over 20 years, all year long (in New England so definitely cold temps, like it is this week). Nothing fancy, just very basic, like this one (https://www.walmart.com/ip/Brinkm...ker/876295).

I'm also in MN and have a similar model, but a 40". I smoke in negative temps as well. I had one occurrence where I had to heat up the controller with a hair dryer (on mild heat and medium fan speed - I took my time). Other than that one time, it's been great. I don't notice that much of a difference in cook times, but I do run about 10° hotter than I would in spring-summer-fall.

Provis83 links some great products to take your smoking to the next level. Especially the cold smoke attachment!

Great to hear all the replies from fellow MN smokers. I just picked up the 40" this summer and plan to use it this Sunday for the first time in negative degree weather. I have had a lot of fun with it so far.

I used mine for the 1st time in 20 degree weather in PA and it was just fine. Temp adjusted quickly and was able to main just fine. I did buy one of those remote thermometers that has two prongs, one for meat and one for the inside so that I could remotely monitor it.

I feel with the cold weather and possible quick and drastic temp changes that it is a must.

Its -3* F here and I have been smoking in mine all morning. Never had an issue. Most are using extension cords that are not rated to handle it and pair that with the cold, negative results. If it doesnt work, return it. I've had mine for 3 years, my father has had his for 4 years. my buddy has had one for 2 years. Cant beat it for easy smoking. If you want super reliable, get a Webber Smokey Mountain.

same thing happened to mine. completely warped.
lesson: buy a cover!!!

actually the rest of the smoker also warped. hot las vegas sun killed it within 2 years.

no loss though, upgraded to a pellet smoker (huge upgrade imo)

I have owned this smoker for about 8 yrs now. It sits outside uncovered for the last atleast 5-6yrs. Now I will admit, sure its sunbleached but it's still viewable and works perfect. This Xmas gift ranks on the BEST gift ever since I used it all year around in MD. My buddy had the same one an lasted him 5+yrs but when he moved it worked one more time then died. But he bought another just bigger model. I have smoked tons of stuff in this smoker. The only thing that could make it better is if u had a small fan IMO a copy low CFM fan to force Air smoked. Just an idea I ha e thought of at times. I have suggested this to many and we use this brand now in all Washington DC Fire Houses through the city. To give u an idea on a normal day there is approximately 12 guys on duty a day, 80+ a Staton. While it doesn't get used everydag it does get used multiple times a week and works great. Not only the abuse of the usage, it's in the bay where the fire trucks are which go in and out 50+ times a day, and that's on a slow day way underestimated, so the point is they get soot from exhaust constant temp changes and sprayed with a hose, most or directly, in washing of the fire trucks daily. This is a very good uni and HIGHLY recommended by me. OBVIOUSLY. HAHA
