OP, thanks. Given the volatility of the price on this drive, I think the words "Normally $259" aren't quite correct. Yes, it had that price for 5 days at the end of December, but this drive has been all over the board.

That being said, this is the lowest price Amazon has had on this product per camel^3.

camelx3 does indeed show this to be the best price amazon has ever had for it.

The specs on this 8TB hard drive look great and the 3 year warranty is normal. Do you think this drive would be a good choice in a desktop PC?

Also, does anyone have any recommendations for a good Drive Enclosure that I could put this drive in and use it as an external backup drive?

Fry's has 2 External Hard Drives on sale that I am interested in per this link: http://images.frys.com/art/email/....html#set9.

Anyone have any thoughts on this G-Technology G-Drive7 with Thunderbolt 3 8TB Hard Drive @ https://www.frys.com/product/9399...IN_RSLT_PG on sale for $399?

What about this WD 8TB My Book Desktop External Hard Drive -USB 3.0 : WDBBGB0080HBK-NESN @ https://www.frys.com/product/8979...IN_RSLT_PG on sale for $169?

Buy this Seagate or WD Red (same 8TB) at $140 plus tax?

This is overkill for a desktop pc. These are nas drives. Network attached storage. They're designed for heavy loads and 24/7/365 uptime. You could buy them if you just want that 3 year warranty but shucking an external drive or buying 2 drives (m.2 ssd or ssd for boot drive, high capacity 8tb drive for everything else) is smarter.

Where did you see the WD Red 8TB for $140? Both are good drives.

Is that G-Drive7 intended to be an external drive that you can work directly off of with intensive programs (ie editing 4k in Final Cut?). It says it's useful for "storage intensive applications" but I'm looking to do playback and editing directly from the drive. I couldn't justify bulking up the iMac Pro with a larger SSD so I'm looking for that extra space externally.

I would read the Amazon reviews, much worse than the Reds

Performance higher on Ironwolf... If you're doing video editing, this will matter. For normal users, it won't. Also Synology NAS boxes will natively talk to the Ironwolf better than the Red. Have lots of Reds in our Synology's - they've been great. But am probably going to start going to Ironwolf or Ironwolf Pro (5yr warranty and data recovery on those)

The base WD Red is 5400 rpm while this is 7200 so there's that plus the red has half the cache. On paper this drive should be a good bit faster, but whether the price is worth it all depends on your workload.

You get what you pay for, the WD my book is really only designed for saving bulk files to/from, where its pretty fast. Actual processing tasks like photoshop go super slow on it, whilt eh G-Drive does OK. If its truly a backup drive you seek, go for the mybook since the cost is a lot lower.

Same. I didn't check yesterday, nor did it trigger my deal alert for '8TB Amazon', so I missed it. I am really wanting to replace the 2 4TB Seagate NAS drives in my HTPC with this 8, or even a 10, but the 8 was a much better price per GB than the larger 10TB drives currently.
