Nintendo Corporate: We'd like to revise the 3DS hardware to add features new games can utilize. Can you come up with a naming scheme?

Nintendo Marketing: Sure can, we'll call it the New 3DS.

Nintendo Corporate: Brilliant! Our consumers won't be confused at all. We're sure glad we promoted you guys after naming Wii's successor – Wii U.

Well it's not really a Fire Emblem game, and the Warriors games all score around the same range generally. I mean, you wouldn't say Zelda was watered down based on Hyrule Warriors.

No. But for additional information I think it's safe to say that there are more 3DS games available for all console versions than just the New 3DS (which the difference is like comparing an Xbox One to an Xbox One X, although I don't know of any games that are exclusive only to the One X). If you're interested in a game look for the "New 3DS" logo on the cover - that will tell you if it's only for that console.

Difference of this game on Switch and 3DS is like a 2017 Chevy Camero and a 1993 Toyota Corolla.

I've lost track of Nintendo's portables since my 3ds xl, can the old 3ds play the "new" games?

Since the purchase of Switch console, my kids have stopped playing the 3DS XL totally.

No, these games require the upgraded hardware of the "New" systems, either the New 3DS (XL), or New 2DS XL. Aside from the Super NES virtual console games there are only a few titles that are exclusive to the "New" models. The most notable ones are Fire Emblem Warriors, Minecraft, Xenoblade Chronicles 3D, The Binding of Isaac, and Runbow Pocket. Other various games also take advantage of or benefit from the newer hardware but will still run on previous models. There is a list here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/3DS/wiki/exclusives

Although Minecraft is missing from it so I think it probably hasn't been updated in about 6 months, though I don't think anything else came out that was "New" exclusive.

From the review scores for this, it appears the Fire Emblem brand has been watered down considerably.

Got this from BestBuy last month with the buy 1 get 1 50% deal, receipt shows this game as full price. Contacted BB chat today to request a price match and got ~$13 back.

No, I wouldn't, because it's called "Hyrule Warriors." Not "The Legend of Zelda: Hyrule Warriors.
Yes, I can see where that makes a difference. Without "The Legend of Zelda" how could anyone possibly be expected to know it's based on the same characters. I mean, it's not like the cover's just a picture of the main character or anything.
