Dash Camera/DVR question

8,492 1,297 January 3, 2018 at 04:48 AM
Are there any "dash cameras" that work with a remote camera that can be mounted to the front license plate or somewhere around the front bumper? I don't want the dash camera on the dash. I see 1000's of rear cameras but they are all backup cameras which is not what I am looking for.

TIA!

Wouldn't a front bumper mounted camera get really dirty and/or damaged quite quickly? That might be a strong reason why they don't really exist. What about a cheap "action" cam in a rugged housing? That might be the best bet.

Well, maybe, but they do have cameras for all sides of the car and they seem to work. I just don't want that big camera sticking on my windshield. Perhaps even if there is a car DVR with dashcam operations that takes a remote camera I could mount it via a license tag frame or through the bumper. Best thing would be an auto clean camera like race-car cameras use. Really even if there was a small (really small) windshield mounted camera that was just the camera and the rest could go in the glovebox that would be better. I really hate this big 'ole camera hanging down from my windshield!

The reason these don't exist is to do it right you would have to clean the camera often and run wires to power it. Switching batteries often is a pain, it would be hard remembering without some type of indicator inside the car. There is also a theft risk being outside the car and I suspect the angle would be pretty poor if it's down low.

Most people don't have a problem putting one on the windshield. I personally tuck mine up behind the rear view window and have tucked the wire around the outside frame of the windshield to make it a more hidden install.

I'm looking at this one which has a better mount than the suction cup styles. Might work for me I'll try it out and see how out of view it ends up being. WiFi too so I don't need to remove it to dump the files.

Another option would be a mirror mount - https://www.amazon.com/Dash-Cam-M...B0102CK1BS

Or a rear view mirror with built in dash cam - https://www.amazon.com/Falcon-Zer...B00E56WY18

I have mine mounted right up top hidden behind sun visor and powered from interior light by rear view mirror.

The rear view mirror won't work I have a Jaguar and the mirror has a ton of shit that the car needs it can't be covered and nothing can go behind it either.

you could get a license plate rear camera to put on your front plate but it will come with a rearview mirror too.

something like this

https://www.amazon.com/LeeKooLuu-...NBBWFW2C7F

or buy an "Action Camera" for 50 bucks with wifi and hook it up inside the grill use an old phone or tablet via wifi?

The problem with these solutions is they are not a "dash camera" per se. They have none of the functionality of a dash cam.

I did get that camera and will be installing it this weekend. So far I am happy with it and it looks like the hardwire installation will be a snap.

I also did not want a big camera on my dash so I ended up installing a Mobius: https://www.mobius-actioncam.com/

They are small because they do not have a screen. There are probably others as well, but mine fits nicely behind my rear view mirror and I can not even see it when driving.

I like the idea of it being built into the rear view mirror. I just don't like the idea of it being as obvious as this one is. I'm thinking that anything obvious makes it a target for theft.
