It's been my experience that Energizer headlamps are quite good for a mass market product. These are no Petzl, Black Diamond or Fenix, but they're reliable and fairly good performers.

I've had an older Energizer LED headlamp for ages and ages and it's been getting a bit long in the tooth performance-wise, so I've been looking to upgrade. Thanks OP!

PRO: Can be very bright. Adjustable brightness is very handy. I particularly like the ability to choose between spot, flood and combo. I typically use flood mode for working around camp or looking at things I am doing. I use spot for trying to look into middle distance at night.

CON: This headlamp shines a LOT of glare into your face. The entire faceplate of the the lamp is clear plastic. When turned on, this plastic refracts light down into your face. It is particularly bad when the spotlight LED is active, as this LED is very bright and is closest to the bottom of the lamp, where the light refracts into your face. The glare into the wearer's face is so bad you really can't see much, unless you hold your hand to your brow in "salute" style, to block the glare. The glare worsens as you tilt the lamp down to shine at a lower angle.

I fixed this glare problem, mostly, by masking the bottom of the lamp with electrical tape. This blocks most of the downward glare. I was careful and did a clean job, so it doesn't look too goofy. However, two stars for even needing to do this, and for the fact that unless you block the glare somehow, this light actually makes night usage very difficult. I would have hoped the Energizer design people would have noticed this problem during product testing and, you know, fixed it themselves.

There are better Headlamps sold on Amazon like the Nightstick for those who are interested in Robbing a bank.

cheapo chinese 18650 headlamps will out perform the Energizer headlamp in every way any day of the week.

chinese 18650 headlamps 1600 lumen (definitely exaggerated but still more powerful than anything I can find for under $20)
Energizer 200 lumen (probably exaggerated too, i would bet it's closer to 100)

For a 200 lumen the price is not bad. I just don't need any more LED anything's.

Assuming we stick with AAA because you can never find an AC outlet in real wilderness areas,

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Ozark-Trail-Auto-Brightness-Headlamp-225-Lumens/49332894

The Ozark Trail headlamp at Wal-Mart one ups most of the other headlamps in this price range and brightness with an auto-brightness spot mode besides standard 2-mode spot, wife, or red.

One of my favorite headlamps due to its nice reach in spot mode, independent activation of spot and wide beams (so each can be on at different levels), frost lens over wide beam, strap that never loses its position, and full tilt to 90° down.

I own both, 18650 definitely has more power and longer throw, but it's very big compared to energizer.

Well, duh. But a lot of people: don't want an 18650 strapped to their head, don't want the weight of an 18650, or simply don't need the extra lumens from an 18650 lamp.

No doubt! AAA? This sucks get a cheap 18650 one with lithium ion it will blow this thing out of the water I've been giving these idiots 650 based headlamps differenza family for about 7 years now probably giving away 15 of them and they can shine a spotlight on your bedroom window from across the street or up to the top of the hundred twenty foot Cottonwood in my backyard they're amazing when I first started buying them the comparable was $729 at REI but now they've come down to like 18 bucks so there is steel especially if you were used batteries from old lithium-ion drill packs what you can find in the recycling bin at Home Depot just what I'm a part and you have high quality specialty High current batteries to use! If you buy an 18 650 base lamp you'll want to throw all this trash AA AAA stuff in the garbage!
