I used Priceline to book hotels frequently, especially their express deals, because let's face it, who doesn't love to save money. I have never had a problem with it until recently. For those of you who are not aware of Express Deals, it's a system where I book a mystery hotel for increased savings and once you lock into a hotel in their terms of service, it is non-cancelable and non-transferrable. I used the feature and there was an express deal that said save 78%, not up to 78%, just flat out save 78% with the price of the hotel being $63 per night, which should have put the hotel in the $280-$290 range. To my dismay, I ended up with a hotel room when I looked up the pictures on travelocity or some other travel website, the room didn't even have a flat screen TV. This is 2017, some motels probably even have flat screen TVs. This did not look like a hotel that would be $280 per night and did not translate into the 78% savings I saw on the screen. I then go back and try to re-book the same express deal to see what happened. This time, under closer inspection, I noticed once I clicked on the express deal, on the next page, in the corner of the picture it changes to save 20%.

Of course I was upset by this finding, so I tried to cancel, but they wouldn't because of their terms of agreement or whatever. I scoured the internet and found an answer.

According to section 4, Category C, subsection 2C.
"We or the applicable hotel may, on an exception basis and at the request of the hotel guest, waive one or more of the restrictions after the hotel room has been booked. We may, in our discretion, impose additional obligations and/or fees in connection with any such waiver. You agree that if your booking is successful, priceline.com will confirm the reservation and charge the entire amount of the stay, including applicable Taxes and Fees (as described below) disclosed to you before booking, to your method of payment. The price listed is per night and does not include priceline.com's charge to you for Taxes and Fees."

Therefore, you call the hotel and ask them if they are ok with canceling it. More then likely they will be. At which point, you have Priceline call them and cancel it. It worked for me.

Of course you can just call your credit card to try and get a charge back, but there's hope for those people

TLDR: Priceline express deal says save 78% savings with cost of hotel being $63 per night. Click on said deal, changes to save 20%. Pissed off, found a way to cancel.
1) Call hotel you received from priceline
2) Ask them to cancel
3) If they agree, call priceline to inform them of this, and ask them to call to cancel. If they refuse, refer to above.
4) Enjoy your refund!

Prices for NYOP used to be good but now you are better off just choosing express deal and saving yourself all the hassle.

Never used it. Probably won't. Reps for the effort to give this tip, regardless.

My experience with their shady business practice was with express deals. Savings went from 76% on an express deal on one screen to 20% when I selected that express deal to book. Just letting people know to pay attention to the savings, cause it will change. Never had this happen to me before until recently and I use their express deal function quite a bit prior

I JUST called and got this done for me! Priceline gave me a hotel that wasn't even showing on their regular hotels to choose from! I nicely called the hotel, they told me to call priceline. I called priceline and the 3-way called the hotel for me and got it cancelled! Thanks so much for the tip!

Worked for me too!!! I paid express for a 4 star hotel they put me in a historic Victorian style hotel with bed bugs!!!!! From reading reviews!!! I immediately regretted my decision and will never do this again!!!! But I called did as the first person said and got a refund no problem!!!!! Called the hotel they agreed to cancel, called Priceline told him I wanted to cancel started read the bold portion of the agreement the first person commented and they called the hotel I was on hold for a few minutes and they did it! So happy not gambling on that again!!!

This is second time I've used Priceline and second time the Express Deal said non-smoking hotel when in fact, it was not a non-smoking hotel. With a child having severe allergies and asthma (along with myself), staying even in a non-smoking designated room in a hotel that allows smoking in *other* rooms has always caused us problems.

I called the hotel to verify the reservation and was asked whether I'd prefer a smoking or non-smoking room. That alone is enough to irritate me when the amenities listed on Priceline's site specifically say non-smoking hotel. I politely explained my child's medical situation and the hotel rep canceled the reservation and told me to contact Priceline for a refund since the payment was made to them and not the hotel directly. I contacted Priceline and provided them with the confirmation number of the cancellation and they immediately told me they would process a refund.

I'm now 1/2 in successfully canceling an Express Deal reservation BUT that's where my stats will stay because I will NEVER use them again.

I followed the advice to call the hotel, request the cancel, they said it would be okay, so I called priceline. at first they were going to charge me a fee for the price of the entire reservation, but then i told them the hotel approved it, I gave the name of the lady I spoke to. He called them and came back on the line and said the charges would be reversed in a day.

More drama to the pot for me. Yesterday, I had a charge for $378 from Priceline (this is the one that both the hotel and Priceline said was canceled due to the smoking designation). This morning, I woke up to a charge of $338 on my card but no email or anything from Priceline indicating that they have made a reservation in this amount. Hmm....

On a side note, I called a friend who's a travel agent just to see if she could find any rooms where I needed one and not only could she book it (and earn the commission) but the rate for a BETTER hotel in a better room (2-room suite) was cheaper than Priceline's Express Deal.

Off to dispute this charge. I will never, ever use Priceline again.

Thanks, this was helpful to know. I accidentally booked the wrong hotel and did not notice it right away. I was able to get approval for cancellation with the local manager, let Priceline confirm, and then rebook the correct hotel on Priceline.

Install the hotel canary plugin. It is pretty good about telling you what hotel you are going to get with the express deal before booking it

I was able to get my express deal cancelled without this hoopla or using the clause, but I guess it really depends who is on the other end of the phone at the hotel you're trying to cancel. I clicked an express deal and was SORELY disappointed with the hotel that was selected since it was only rate a 6 on verified Priceline guest reviews... the express deal used verified 8-rated hotels as similar hotels... I wasn't okay with that!!!!

I called the hotel and spoke with a manager, claiming that the Priceline booking was misleading and I meant to get a hotel on the other side of town and requested approval for cancellation. She said to have Priceline call and ask for her. I chatted with a Priceline associate and they called her and confirmed. I received cancellation confirmation through email from Priceline! Woohoo! I don't know if this will always work, but I do believe I was misled during booking!
