Tracfone Samsung Galaxy J7 Sky Pro smartphone question

1,342 85 January 6, 2018 at 08:10 AM
I'm not sure if this is the right forum, but I have a question about the new Samsung phone I just bought with Tracfone service.

I am trying to set up my new phone but am stuck and need help. Is there a place I can take my phone to get help? I've always had I-phones and didn't realize Samsung didn't have stores where I could get my questions and problems answered.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You could try best buy, walmart, or target.

You could also simply ask for help (in more detail) here or try howardforums.

Why do conservative politicians oppose conservation?
Have you ever stopped to think the long-term GOP immigration policy might be to make the United States of America a less desirable place to live than Mexico?

Lots of information on the internet too. I'd suggest instead of searching your exact phone model, you search for your os. For example: "Android 6.0 marshmallow change ringtone" or "Android marshmallow tutorial". Samsung changes things a bit from the stock Android experience, but it's easy enough to figure out the differences.

You public library may also have classes where they try to tech people technology and provide 1 on 1 assistance at these.

The Samsung Galaxy J7 Sky Pro is not a high end phone, compared to an iPhone you'll find many disappointments. However it may be ok for your needs. It's also possible to bring your own phone on tracfone and buy something like an unlocked Moto G5 Plus. If you're able to put up with this phone for a year or two, byop would be a better option in the future. I'm guessing you may have acquired this phone from hsn or qvc with some airtime included.

You have been so helpful, jkee. Thanks for all the information. You guessed right. I got my phone through QVC with a year of service. Not sure I would have gotten it if I knew how different an android phone would be. But I'm figuring it out slowly but surely. I checked Howardforums and will be going back there. I will bookmark both of the websites your suggested. I'll post again and give you an update.

Thanks again for being so helpful. I definitely appreciate it. Thank goodness for websites like Slickdeals. Will rep again when I can.

What specific iPhone model and carrier did you have before and why did you switch?

I have an iPhone5S with AT&T. Had lots of recurring problems with my phone - the worst was opening my phone to see I had No Service. Usually I just had to turn it all the way off and restart, but once I couldn't get service for over 2 days. Had lots of dropped calls. Had to get several new SIM cards from AT&T - sometimes it helped, sometimes it didn't. Sometimes it rang, sometimes it didn't. I'm lucky I live near an Apple store and could go get help when I needed it. I just think Apple products are a little over-rated. Anyway, this Samsung phone should be fine for me.

I read the manual and learned a lot and was able to set up some things. I'm hoping to get up to one of the stores you recommended in a couple of days. I'll post after I do that.

The 5s is a pretty old phone and I'm not surprised it's acting up. There's a good chance many of it's issues are related to a failing battery. Unfortunately the 5s isn't included in apple's $29 battery replacement program. Android is a bit of a mess when it comes to software updates and low end phones like J7 see very few if any updates. It's ironic, the OS on your 5s is more up to date than your J7. The camera on the J7 isn't as good as the 5s either.

Bottom line in a year or two when you decide you want a better phone, look at unlocked phones not phones sold by tracfone.

Also here's the manual for your exact phone:

It's funny, I didn't know much about unlocked phones and so I looked into them during the holidays but couldn't find a good deal on one and, with all the problems I was having with mine, decided to go with this Samsung deal when I saw it. I'll definitely remember to look into an unlocked phone again when I'm ready for a new one.

Thanks for the link to my exact manual. That's what I'll be doing as soon as I post this! Thanks again - you've been a great help.
