Right now you can get the Lenovo Explorer Mixed Reality headset with controllers for $257.85 via Amazon. Also, same day delivery in Chicago land area. Only a few left in stock and I purchased one.
  • Windows MR has inside out tracking. (You don't need external tracking devices)
  • Works with Steam VR
  • Can work with Occulus Rift games
EDIT: Looks like Jet.com also has the same price. Not sure how people still feel about Jet as a retailer though.
Last edit: Looks like the product is "Fulfilled by Amazon" from several third parties and not directly from Amazon. Most have high ratings and that means no Tax!

Here's a fairly good comparison video of the lenovo headset vs the Samsung Odyssey headset:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GjYycEI3hP8
The Samsung Odyssey is definitely the best windows MR headset and thought by some to be the best VR headset out for consumers right now.

The video reviewer comes to the conclusion that the Lenovo is the 2nd best Windows MR headset behind the Samsung and for around $200- 250 the Lenovo is a better buy even with cons.

This, and all the other MR headsets, has been available from various 3rd parties at these or lower prices for at least the last week. In fact, I think this Lenovo was closer to $200 the other day. The HP was $208. You know all those "free" headsets that people got with their bundles at BB. Well... they couldn't sell them on ebay/cl so this is another try to dispose of them. Don't buy into it. You can get this Lenovo new on CL for $200 max. Many sellers are willing to take less. I've seen a few go for $150.

I bought lenovo explorer bundle from Microsoft store when they had it in sale for $200.

Works pretty well so far, but i had to replace the first one i bought. It worked fine for about an hour of use, then the display stopped working. Backlight was on, but nothing displayed.

I tried numerous uninstalls and reinstall, but no luck. 2nd one has worked fine with no issues.

Fortunately it was a no hassle replacement from the Microsoft store. Having physical location nearby made it really simple.

I guess it all depends. There are no VR headsets I can see close (20 minute or less drive) to my area. Also, it seems like a lot of HP/Acer headsets are being sold 2nd hand so I'm not sure if that's because the HP/Acer headsets are lower quality. I thought the Lenovo's were $200 from MS, but did that price include the controllers? For me, for something that goes over your face where there might be sweat and other bodily fluids I'd prefer new to used. Good point about the free ones people got from the BB promotion though. Didn't think about that.

I bought one. Seems like a perfect solution for the kind of set up I can have and to get a taste for vr.

Yes the $200 ones from MS did come with controllers. The only ones that didn't were the developer headsets from many months ago.

I like my Acer set, it's better rated than the Lenovo set, and it's only $220 on Amazon Prime.

I'd consider buying a couple sets for my boys (youngest is turning 18 in February, oldest is 26, but I need an excuse to get it for him) - but I may wait a few more weeks, as the price keeps on falling.

The beauty of VR is the immersion and being able to double gun. Much better than having a gun glued to your chest, like non-VR FPS games. For me, 3D is less effective (mostly blind in one eye due to radiation treatments), but it hardly matters...

Also, keep in mind these are second generation VR as it exists today. No "sensor pods" to worry about or full-room setups. There are some shortcomings, and I expect more refinement in the future, perhaps additional cameras (cheaper than sensor pods).

Also, Mixed Reality at least has a shot of being made to work with the Xbox, since this is Microsoft's standard. I'd like to see this happen before HoloLens, which is still ridiculously expensive.

the vive ($600 msrp) may still be the best overall followed by the samsung hmd Odyssey ($500 msrp). i bought an Odyssey for $99 as part of a computer bundle but no one has responded to my craigslist in almost a month. i think consumers are so ignorant when it comes to vr they are suckered into these bad units from hp, acer, lenovo, dell, etc. even though my unit is brand new, factory sealed. even dropping the price below $280 hasn't helped.

at this point I'll have to make an ebay or amazon marketplace account.
