I thought $10/month was just the normal price for PF?

That's standard pricing for them.
And for anyone considering Planet Fitness: The gym has absolutely no free weights. You cannot squat, deadlift, or bench press at a Planet Fitness. If you have any interest whatsoever in building strength (or frankly in losing bodyfat), PF isn't the "gym" for you.

MY PF has plenty of dumbbells + smith machines.

They charge $39 membership two months after you join. This is on top of the $1 "joining fee" they advertise. Also, I believe they require you to give them your bank account info to withdraw (no credit cards).

Is by far the biggest myth in 'do you even lift bro' logic ever.

I am going to go on a limb here and say you are far from a personal trainer, although neither am I. Probably one of the best ways to loose fat would be from the elliptical on the high setting and using a leg press. Building up other muscle groups can help, but your leg muscles are your largest and are where its at for fat loss. Also many of these gyms do have free weights, I thought all did, but it may be regional. There are better gyms out there but PF at $10 is the best deal for many people.

Mediocre deal, total comes out to be $160 annually ($1 startup fee + $39 annual fee + $10 monthly). The only problems I see are "billed monthly to a checking account" sounds like a cancellation nightmare waiting to happen and locked to one gym location.
