Damn good deal. Wonder why Amazon has it for such a low price, it's $450-$500 everywhere else.

Great deal. Ordered even though it's out of stock. We'll see how long it takes to ship.

While this cam (better is the D3300) the D3400 represents the least bad value combo right now; new cameras are coming now. If you need one now this should be considered. New ones are never the best value and you get that "driven off the lot" now used deprecation. Prices need to come WAY down! Buy accordingly. No regrets. You'll never have the latest and greatest but for about 5 minutes anyway. LOL. Progress is NOT a bad thing though. We just need more than the trickle.

For:
o It's the sensor stupid. (Better highlight range, color sensitivity and crop-ability)
o Well actually lenses are first and Nikon F mount has good value choices OVER that sensor. Also APS-C (DX) is the Goldilocks size balance.
o It's a real DSLR (compared to affordable mirror-less and other cons) and not yet value beaten for clear eye viewfinder OVF and phase detect predictive continuous auto focus (with decent spread of focus points).
o The size isn't too big or too small or too light and fiddly.(Try it in your hands first). Your cell phone is your (crappy) pocket camera.
o Changeable lenses; BUT CHOOSE ONLY TWO.
o Takes good flash guns (options). note: You don't have to get Nikon matching. Just safe and compatible.
o Video (sensor) 1080 is very good. With many video lens options.
o AF-P lens helps vids; but only focuses (at all) on the very newest Nikon Digital bodies.
o Trouble free battery life.

Against D3400:
o Weaker flash than D3300.
o Why take out sensor cleaning?
o Why take off mic jack? It's the best way to stop lens noises. (Though mics are not cheap).
o Video is great and AF live view works; but is best done manual focusing (or at least per-focusing)
o You'd prefer stills by eye level OVF here. Pro or con?
o If all you do is video then this is slightly weighted to still shots due to the tech.
o You can't do video via the OVF. Live view only. Manual video exposure requires stop and restart of your recording. But it works on auto exposure.
o Gear Acquisition Syndrome. get only two lenses. One toward wide and the other TOWARD tele. I like primes.

But it's not about the specs alone. The system/equipment is secondary to you(your eye and vision); but does matter. Don't buy for the toy and thrill aspects. Get the tool you need. Some system challenges are actually good. Some are not!

Consider the AF-P kit lens and the 50mm f/1.8 G prime lens (for people & stage shots). x1.5 crop factor makes 50mm a short tele. STOP there [That's not easy]. The 55-200 (not 300) AF-S VR is another great affordable choice that's not terrible huge. 300mm-equivalence telephoto. Just not for low light. Hint: Low light is never "better" though. You have one of the best fill flashes; but that's within a limited flash distance. The fast 50 is not just for low light. However you may find just setting to the bodies Portrait (lady) setting works best for people with correct lower ISO plus fill flash. Try a white piece of copy paper around your flash for "beauty dish" great looking fill flash. With an added high power flash you can bounce (white ceilings are best); but be prepared to "gell" (yellow film) any "other" (usually Orange) bright or close to subject lighting.

I've often found the 50mm to be just a little too tight (at least for my purposes) with the 1.5x crop. Going to give the 35mm 1.8 a shot this time which will get me pretty close to the 50mm view and about $20 cheaper.

That's a good move for you if the 50 is usually to tight. Smaller too. Definitely more multi purpose. I like a lot of head and shoulders or two people shots; so I prefer the 50. Plus the 50 has great attributes compared to anything.
