$1 for a stainless steel ruler with cork backing. Check brick seek for local availability. Check Amazon for reviews.

Pros:
  • 75% off reg. price
  • Stainless
  • Brand name = quality
  • Etched (not just printed) scales in metric and inch - writings won't rub off

Cons:
  • Relatively thin
  • Cork backing
  • Retail sticker is really hard to remove. It doesn't peel off even under heat gun. Need to use Goo-Gone, acetone, WD40, nail polish remover or such. But be careful not to destroy the cork underneath it. Cover the sticker first with masking tape and peel off shiny surface from sticker, then repeat to expose bare paper. Bare paper will soak in whatever chemical you decide to use to dissolve the sticker's stubborn glue.

This is what worked for me to remove the nasty stickers:
  1. 1" masking tape (or duct tape, packing tape etc) pasted firmly over the sticker and then peeled off removes shiny surface at first pass, and removes printed layer at second pass.
  2. Soaking the paper part with Liquid Wrench penetrating spray or WD-40 will dissolve the glue in 3-4 hours, BUTTTT..... you don't want any of it to spill under and moisten the cork, So... after you get the paper part soaked, flip the ruler printed side down on a dinner plate, so the edges of plate will hold it suspended and gravity will prevent the liquid from traveling up to the cork.
  3. After 3-4 hours wipe all oil and wipe the sticker off with 91% rubbing alcohol. Perhaps Nail polish remover will work just as well.
The nice thing is that the oil does not affect the printing on the ruler's scale at all. That is etched and stays clear and solid.

UPDATE:
It's ridiculous how stubborn is that sticker. Liquid Wrench penetrating oil seems to work on it the best. Better than WD-40 or Goo Gone.

UPDATE 2:
I cannot recommend buying this ruler because of that horrible sticker that does not come off, it's a real pain in the ass and a waste of time trying to remove it. It's doable but at a great cost of wasted time and frustration. I bought several and cleaned all up while watching Tucker, but this must be the worst product sticker ever made.

Lol, I bought this ruler a while ago and today I decided to remove that sticker. Well, after almost an hour of a fight with a nail polish remover, brush and some other household other chemicals I finally got it off, but it looks like I damaged the cork a little bit during this struggle.

This is the most f*ed up sticker I've ever encountered that I had to remove. I mean, sometimes you can just live with a sticker, but here it completely covered the scale, so XActo folks must've realized it would have to be removed, yet they decided to use this kind of adhesive... Absolutely unreal lol.
