Accidentally pre-paid for a car rental. Anyway to get out of it?

Made the mistake of going to Payless. Clicked pay at counter. On the sign-up page they have a checkbox to "secure with a credit card". It's been kind of FinePrint like you have to click the box is part of the transaction.

I know I know I take responsibility

Still if there's anyway I can get out of this. I do feel like it's a sleazy track and so I don't mind a sleazy trick to get my money back and pay more of the rent from somebody else.

Does anybody know any way to get the money back? I already tried with customer service for 20 minutes. They are very into defending that check box

It's also OK to post on this thread that I'm an idiot or whatever lol

You should be able to get out by paying the $50 cancellation fee. Their terms & conditions say

If you need to cancel 48 hours prior to the scheduled pick-up time, we will refund the full prepaid amount, less a $50.00 USD processing fee. If the prepay amount is less than $50.00 USD, the entire amount will be forfeited.

Mel is correct. Unless you save more than $50, it's not worth canceling. I did the same thing with an upcoming reservation through a different company but haven't found a significantly lower rate.

I sometimes prepay when savings warrant. Once I canceled without a fee when a hurricane canceled my flight and closed the bridge to my destination. I cannot,in good conscience, tell you to hope for a natural disaster.

Check with credit card company. Given you have not used the service, the vendor should not charge?

Have you done that? Has any other slickdealer? I would consider it a prepaid contract. Wouldn't it be similar to my buying a gift certificate for a restaurant and then I decide I don't want to use it? I doubt I would be able to get my money back.

I just found an article that was published by both Autoslash and quoted by Fox News.

You may find a sympathetic customer service agent or not. When I was refunded, they charged the $50 and the airport closed which forced the closing of the rental car company and then my $50 was refunded.

My card company said I'd have to replace the card, which would be a huge PITA, given that I have so many bills and services services automatically billing on it. I guess I'll eat it. Thanks for the posts.

If it's Payless at MCO, they will attempt to upcharge you onsite every time, and won't let you rent the car without spending more. They're well known for this scam (read the reviews). Just go to pick up your car, note the upcharges they're trying to get from you without disclosure, dispute with your cc. It's an easy win.

I just canceled a Payless from Priceline. It was a cancelable rate. They were about $80 less than what I was looking at.

I time share and II sent me a coupon so I checked their rates. 👎 But RCI was $100 less than what I had been looking at with companies like Hertz, Avis, Alamo, so just booked a member's rate there. Thought I would mention it as I would have never thought to do that.
