Amazon has the Synology 2 bay NAS Disk Station, DS216play (Diskless) (B015JQAWW0) for $179.99.+ tax. Amazon is currently "temporarily out of stock" but is still selling them to ship when they come back in stock so this may not be live for long.

This is tied for the lowest price ever according to camel camel camel.

I passed on this, because I'd really like to use Docker on these, and that only works on ones with intel processors. More expensive of course ಠ_ಠ

The ds218play is $229 on Amazon also, the newer version of this. Back ordered at the moment, but available for purchase.

Appears to be dead now.

It was showing the $179.99 price for Prime members only. But I didn't have Prime.

By the time I got signed up for my free Amazon Prime 30 day trial, the price had jumped to $274.57. Or maybe I don't get the special price 'cause I just signed up for the free trial?

No, I've had prime and the price is the same that you see (~$274)

Synology is not the company it used to be.

Way too many fan related failures. Way too many vulnerabilities that they say are fixed but make the systems slow as hell.

I would be extremely concerned if you are connecting this to a switch to a router. make sure you have a VPN router and or atleast a pfSense system in between the router and switch.

Try to limit all access from outside your network, even if you set up external access credentials. These NASs are perfect attack vectors for crypto currency mining and its getting out of hand.

Approach with caution.

I have to admit I love the Synology interface and how easy it is to add Apps to it. What I do not like is the hardware is pretty lame and very expensive. You can build your own using the Xpenology boot loader and then installing Synology on top of it (Legally).

That is what I have done on servers like this here: https://boston.craigslist.org/sob...82540.html

How does that compare as far as power usage goes? Over time you might be spending more due to electricity.

Good price but I just paid $229 for the 218play. Thus far I've been really happy with it. I needed to replace my home NVR and got the benefit of getting a good NAS solution as well.

Wouldn't attaching this to a switch + router (or just a router) be the primary use for one of these? How else would somebody configure one?

I should look into the security settings on ours, I suppose. It's tied to a GbE switch which hooks to a Google WiFi router which then goes to the FiOS modem/router. What do I need to do to keep it protected beyond the built-in password authentication?
