I'm a complete newbie when it comes to hardware tools, but I wanted to get a dremel for some sanding-only. Is this a good idea or should I get something with less stuff?

First of all, get a flex shaft grinder. They are amazingly useful. You'll need a good set of bits etc. too. This will fit the bill.

However, this guy is excellent and a lot cheaper: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003BYRFH8

I paid $15 earlier this year, but $19.51 ain't bad either. I've put through quite a bit and it's held up really well.

DO NOT FORGET EYE PROTECTION.

I really appreciate this comment. This looks great.

P.S. The primary thing I'm sanding for is 3D plastic prints, which I didn't think would matter but on second thought seemed worth mentioning. Adding this to amazon cart!

For sanding what, exactly? Rotary tools are ideal for small sanding small things, especially rounded or "oddly" shaped things, or parts of things with intricate detail. But they'd be a terrible tool for what I think of as "general purpose sanding" - of mostly large(r), flat surfaces for example or even large smoothly-rounded things (like table legs, etc).

And in any event, I'll second the Wen, especially as a "first" or "starter" rotary tool. I have one, it works well, and if you're not even sure you'll use it much, it makes a lot more sense to get a much cheaper but perfectly serviceable version than going straight for "best in class:... And fwiw, if you don't have an immediate need for it, keep an eye on the Wen, the current $20 is on the high side for it. It often drops to around $17, and occasionally dips even lower.

Good find, thumbs up. That extra flex shaft sealed the deal for me. Was also able to get this item https://www.lowes.com/pd/Dremel-1...1000248167 as a complementing accessory.
