I never thought I'd see the day when pencils cost $80.

Precision accuracy. Try drawing 5 lines that are spaced 1 millimeter apart without them ever touching with a capacitive rubber tipped stylus. Now, repeat this technique when using the drawing app for real artwork. If you're not an artist or don't do art, the apple pencil in my opinion is completely pointless.

Here's the thing. If your current stylus works for your current needs, then the apple pencil is completely pointless. It needs to be charged. Approximately 30 minute on the charge and it reaches 100% capacity, giving you a full day worth of usage.

The "concern/problem" is that the apple pencil is a bluetooth device. It won't work on any other tablet. It must be a PRO tablet. I have an ipad 4 retina and I tried pairing it but it will not register. It must be paired with the lighting port on your ipad pro. When not using the pencil, you must turn off the bluetooth otherwise the apple pencil battery will continue to drain.

If you truly want a precision stylus (that likely works on all tablets) but don't want to pay $100 for the pencil, you can look into something like this. Read the reviews, some people do say that it doesn't work on their tablets.

The part in bold (i..e small tip doesn't block the user's view) is exactly why precision stylus like the Apple Pencil, or adonit jot pro etc are useful. The added advantage of the apple pencil is that you can use the tilt and shade function.

Not a precision stylus if that is what is needed for pinpoint accuracy where the rubber tip doesn't block your pencil stroke view. Any stylus with the black rounded rubber end is difficult to nearly impossible to drawing lines that are only millimeter apart adjacent to each other.

The apple pencil is predominantly an art tool for artist that need precision accuracy. Look at it this way, would you rather draw with a marker or a sharp pencil?

I was hesitant on getting the pencil because I thought it was ridiculous to spend $100 dollar on an apple accessory. It's a freaking stylus is what I said to myself. I first ran a test run down at best buy. Still debated. Went on youtube and found DIY precision stylus using a paper clip, anti-static plastic (i.e. stuff that wraps around electronic harddrives, chocolate candy wrapper, aluminium foil, etc). Here's a couple of video that I was following when attempting to make a precision stylus. It worked on my older ipad. The overall experience was okay. Sometimes I got frustrated when I tilted the stylus at an angle and wouldn't get strokes. Also can't shade with these homemade DIY styluses either. Reluctantly but happy that I did get the apple pencil along with the ipad pro 12.9.

The hate is because of the price. Regardless of what other manufacturers are putting out, just the idea of a "stylus" being $100 is still ridiculous. Yes, I bought one myself because it makes drawing on the ipad pro 12.9 so much easier. The only reason why I got the 12.9 with the pencil was to start digital drawing. Saves paper.

Tax in CA. Repped for others though.

Edit: as others have pointed out. Although tax does show initially, you aren't actually charged tax at checkout. Thanks OP!

I feel like everyone who wanted one of these would've gotten one already. It's maybe half the reason to buy the iPad Pro over the other models. Still good deal if you're planning on picking one up in the near future.

Will buying this pencil make people like me more? Or make other humans think I'm loaded?

Do they have a necklace type holder for it? I'd wear it loud and proud.
