I thought I read that this requires a monthly fee or some sort of fee that they didn't originally charge. Anybody know about this? Still searching online via my phone for info

No monthly fee, I have had one for almost a year. Connects to home wifi and you need to create a free account with Chamberlain.

I found the answer after posting. Maybe you are grandfathered in. The website states free for 30 days and then a subscription fee applies. Considering people can do this with a smart outlet and a relay with a one time cost of $40 or so, this isn't a slickdeal even if free

That's pretty lame they charge a fee now. I had one at my previous home without a fee. The door sensor would constantly go wonky. Had to change battery often. It also had this 5 second warning light and beep that goes off before the door would close. Never understood that. The app was rough but it mostly worked. I guess you could cobble something together with a relay and a sensor, but seems like a lot of work. I think bigger issue is they added another hoop to jump through with no real benefits. The original model with free service 2 years ago cost me $100. This is now 50 bucks and $10/yr. kind of a wash imho.

Monthly fee makes no sense. This is why many old companies are getting kicked in butt. Makes no sense for monthly because it should NOT have to use their servers.

What is the best DIY with other hubs and sensors?

I have this. No fee to use this with the MyQ app. A fee is needed only to use it beyond that, like with IFTTT. I tried it for the first free month, but it never worked as stated. I just cancelled the subscription so I'm just using this via the app. Wish it worked with my Echo/Alexa.

This is the old G0201 model from 2013. A newer 2017 model has been out for awhile G0301 with several improvements. Just google it for specifics.

The only fee is a $1/mo IF you want to use it with IFTTT otherwise it's free to use with its own app or other compatible home automation systems.

BTW the G0301 popped up on Amazon today for $80 from a 3rd party seller w/Prime. Apparently it isn't in stock until 1/21 but they're accepting backorders. Seller has only a few feedbacks so caveat emptor. I'm not posting a link because I'd tired of SD mods pulling my links because the seller's feedback doesn't meet the SD quality bar... and I doubt this one would. Easy to find though.
