Best Buy Open Box Cameras - Huge YMMV Sony RX100 $225
Just thought I would share an experience that my be difficult to replicate but the approach may help someone.
I recently was in search of a new digital camera. Missed out on the black friday deals on the Canon G9 Mark II sales. I learned that best buy sells sony cameras and since Sony doesn't take back their open box items, Best Buy will sell these cameras as a discount. Sometimes a large discount.
So I bookmarked a search on best buy .com for open box digital cameras and regularly watched what was available. Best buy has a few categories of open box. Open box Excellent, that you can purchase online and they ship to a store, Open box Satisfactory which is an in store purchase only, and Open Box Fair which also is in store purchase only. For all categories, there is an option to see if it is in a store within 250 miles from your selected area.
So here is what i was able to find. The Sony RX100 camera, sells new for $449. Over a few weeks, this camera popped on and off the open box list. Typically the Open Box Excellent was available for $305. Pretty good deal for a $449 camera. Within the last few weeks, an Open Box Satisfactory showed up in a store about 45 minutes from my home for $282. So Sunday morning i went to the store and asked about the camera. After having some trouble finding the 1 open box camera, the salesman found the camera, pulled it out and the box itself was marked $242. Now this is not the only store i went to asking about their open box cameras and every camera I found, I asked the salesman to ask the manager if they could reduce the price any. So I asked the salesman to ask the manager and he did and came back with a price of $225. Now what i forgot to say was when we opened the box, the camera inside was barely touched. The protective film on the back of the camera was still intact. The twist tie on the usb cable was untouched. I lucked out big time. The box itself had the label that said satisfactory with no missing accessories.
I'm also an elite member at best buy and had 10$ in credits, so basically got a $449 camera for $215.
This turned out to be a game for me. Could i get a great deal on a digital camera and I think i did. I'm sharing because with a little interest, time and energy, there may be other diamonds in the rough deals thru best buy open box.
For example, I saw a beat up Sony alpha 5000 with no parts and scratches that i passed up for $239. New a5100's sell for $549 and the Open Box Excellent camera is priced at $466 (83$ savings), Open Box Satisfactory camera in store only is $395 (154$ savings) Open Box Fair in store only is $384 ($165 savings). When you find one of these in a store and ask, the manager will likely take even more $ off the price.
There are deals out there if your looking for one. Not sure if my deal can be recreated, but i got a slickdeal with a little bit of work.
