You can use it with any laptop, desktop or mac that can output USB 3.0. You need to install Display Link software.

That's normal for anything. That's not the fault of the docking station.

You can use a USB 3.0 dock and get a hdmi to USB converter. They usually don't require any specific drivers.

HDMI to USB? You're either talking about USB-C, which is still too new for the vast majority of corporate laptops, or a DisplayLink adapter, which will still need admin rights to set up the first time.

Correct, it's a display link adapter.I use one from diamond and it didn't require any admin rights to set up.

OK, this is a DisplayLink, stay away from it -- based on my own experience (and tons of messages on their forums), it's POS technology.

You may just need to update the drivers. I've been using a DisplayLink dock at work for the last 18 months and it's malfunctioned just a handful of times. It's not perfect, but at most I end up having to restart my computer to fix the docking station maybe once every 3 months.

I'm a software engineer, so yes, I updated the drivers, patched and recompiled the kernel module, upgraded the BIOS. I did this and that and a dozen of other things... ended up having it working (to some degree), but with a very strong feeling that this technology is quite far from being ready, and apparently their engineering dept is weaker than their sales team.
