This thing is great... unless you need to charge a dead battery. Then you will need a cheap charger to bring the battery up to a level that this charger can recognize. Otherwise this charger will not even see that there is a battery in the slot.

True, I keep a cheap usb charger handy just for that. Otherwise this is a awesome charger.

This model does not have a discharge only test mode, it discharges and recharges the battery and displays the capacity that it have charged. So you won't be able to test for example your battery's self discharge and juice retention.
other than that it is a good model, charges my eneloops and cheapo EBLs pretty fast and reliable.

Great charger I bought it used on March 7, 2014. I used it at least 2-3x a week for my canon flash, flashlights and couples other motion lights in the house. Works great!

Can you explain how you do this with a dead battery and a cheap usb charger?

I have two of these. Great at charging batteries. Only problem I have with both is the buttons to change the setting have to be pressed hard and held to change the settings. When they were new you just pressed the button once and the setting changed. Tried spraying contact cleaner on the buttons, but no help.

Agreed. Something is a little messed up w/ this aspect of the UI. You can sometimes press the mode button and nothing seems to happen. Triy one or two times more, then it suddenly changes. Great charger, but it is a bit wonky in this respect.

This is ok if you ONLY have to charge the AA or AAA, but you can buy chargers that charges a lot more types of batteries for about the same price. As said above, the Nitecore D4 can be had for about 24 bucks and is a popular charger and charges a ton of different batteries.

You can use a paper clip to bridge the + terminals of a good battery adjacent to the dead one in the charger to trick it into starting.

Where can I get Nitecore D4 for $24? Amazon price has been around $34. TIA.

Yes, but be sure to unplug the charger from power before doing this!

Cheap charger will attempt to charge anything, dead or alive.
