My guess is so that if you plug a 4k source into the receiver that it outputs 4k to the TV.

Onkyo has been good to me.
They fixed my 5 year old model for free! And shipped it both ways for free!

Why do audio receivers take 4k/hdr? Do new video standards change the audio compatibility?

Onkyo is trash compared to denon and Yamaha. You're welcome.

I love the sound profile of the Onkyo receivers. at this point it has been a decade since I had Yamaha and Denon receivers, but back then at least they were too bright for me.

Yesterday I paid $599 no tax for the RZ810 (2017 model) at Crutchfield. Called them to cancel and they dropped the 810 to $509, free shipping, no tax. The 820 was $696 shipped with California tax. Not worth the extra $187 IMHO.

While you are entitled to your opinion my Onkyo is 11 years old and still works flawlessly. Onkyo offers a 3 year warranty. And Onyo sounds way more musical than any Denon I've ever heard. Just bought a new Onkyo RZ810 to upgrade and get Dolby Vision and 4k HDMI Pass through.

isn't onkyo and denon the same company now?
No, you're thinking of Pioneer.

I've had more problems with Yamaha than Onkyo. But, that's just me.
Personally, I love my Denon.
