Agreed. That said, these are on sale because they're now selling newer versions [simplisafe.com] with an updated look.

I bought this back in September when it was $199 with the Simplisafe Boost package thrown in, but returned it. The tech is old and their pricing model while simple is annoying ($10/mo extra to use a smart phone app? C'mon)

If you're in the market now, I'd seriously consider the latest version which has better tech and more features.

For many years Simplisafe was the only player this market, but Abode, ADT, Nest, and Ring (eventually) have finally put pressure on them to modernize.

The new version is more secure, has better range, and should get smart home integration support this year.

This looks straight out of 1998....

Updated look and newer/better (supposedly) technology from what they said at CES. The older gen should still be fine but the systems are not forward and backward compatible.

Wow had no idea the app has a subscription fee. That's just silly. Was considering this but think I'll pass.

I might buy this for my mother-in-law.

I have this system and its pretty good, for a user-installed system you can't beat it.

I've got this system and while old and dated, it works, and works well. It's a piece of mind for those who want that and I've never had any major issues.

For those with Ooma that are already premier members, Ooma added (CES) a few devices to their home security that is now worth a look as well.

Does the newer generation fix the exploit where a thief can keep the alarm from going off?

can anyone recommend a decent self-monitored security system without a monthly fee? I keep seeing the iSmartAlarm package (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00MWVK...UTF8&psc=1) but saw the design to be 2 years old, and numerous complains about the app. I was also considering the Skylink self-monitoring kit, but couldn't find any decent reviews on either...

I don't have it, but https://goabode.com gets mentioned a lot. I read their camera sucks, though.

I do use Simplisafe, and consider it to be a reliable and inexpensive (compared to other players) service, but since the hardware is proprietary, there's no hope of integrating to home automation or porting to another vendor. Livewatch/Frontpoint seem to offer more standards-compatible solutions, albeit more expensive both to acquire the system, and to maintain the monitoring service.

For the price, it is a great deal, IMO, and if you don't plan integrating it with the rest of you home, I can highly recommend the service.
