Republic used to be pretty good and one of the cheapest around. I had them for about 4 years. Their service kept getting worse and their prices kept going up. My main complaint was call quality though. People were always saying there was a delay or it was hard to hear me.

Just a warning: porting out can be difficult. Only T-Mobile networks allowed me to do it. Also, my LTE speeds were laughable at best.

so their plan:
$15 for Unlimited Talk & Text.

If you want LTE data, you need to pay $5 /GB?

the cheapest plan with data is $20? I don't think it's a good deal.

This is a great deal, $15 for unlimited talk/text + $5/GB. I just wish they offered some kind of international service.

You want minsim. Unlimited int'l texting and if you get a long term plan, you get a "wallet" with an allowance for int'l calls.

Compatibility list is here [republicwireless.com]. Seems from some threads you can activate the line/sim on a compatible phone then insert it in unsupported phones and service works. (not sure how well)

I bought a phone last month that came with a free Republic Wireless SIM kit + 6 months of "free" service (free + $1.99 in taxes for me). The service worked quite well (they use either T-Mobile or Sprint now; mine was T-Mobile). I got good download speeds - 20Mbps+ and higher which to me is decent enough.

But I switched to Sprint's BYOD 1 year free plan so I'm not using my SIM right now. (I ported a different number to Sprint, not my Republic Wireless number, which was a new number for me.)

Republic Wireless uses "hybrid" calling for voice calls - WiFi when it's strong, regular voice channels otherwise
(sometimes both at the same time it seems). I only made a few voice calls with it (using their app) and it worked fine. Although Republic Wireless claims only certain phones are compatible, I put my Republic Wireless SIM in an older T-Mobile compatible Android and have been using it as a hotspot without issue. In fact, I was surprised that the old phone's regular dialer let me make calls out - this thing is clearly too old to be compatible with RW but it worked anyway. Currently tethered to a security system so rarely used - still works though!

you don't have to deal with an underlying number this way right? we left a few years ago because that was annoying as hell with their cdma phones.
