Yi 4k+ Action Camera w/ Waterproof Case $249 w/ Newsletter Code

An SD user tipped me off on this deal a week ago and I ordered one. It's the cheapest the 4k+ has been selling for lately and if you want 4k video plus external audio this is by far the best solution on the market. So far I like it a lot more than my GoPro Hero 5 Black.

I don't need my code for today, so if anyone would like to use it here it is: 8841003

Here are the rest of the daily deals if you don't want the camera:

You might be able to register for the newsletter and get a code immediately, I'm not sure on that.

Love the Yi product line. I just wish they put a display on the front of the camera like gopro.

How is Yi compared to GoPro Hero 5?

Newer chip... A9SE75 so it can do 4k60. The Hero 5 is the older A9SE7 so it's only 4k30. Otherwise it's largely a wash. Accessories are largely interchangeable as that's Yi's whole thing - don't need to build your own accessory ecosystem if you can just bum from GoPro.

Source: Hero 5 Black owner - mostly because I needed a camera then and the Yi 4k+ was taking it's sweet time going on sale.

4k+ does 4k/60 while the GP Hero 5 only does 4k/30. The Hero 5 is waterproof by design but that also makes the external audio horrendous. Also, the waterproof casing is kind of a wash because you need to use a case to attach the GP to any accessories anyways.

Both cameras support external mics if you buy the adapters but GoPro's is proprietary and costs $50 while the 4k+ adapter only costs $8 (but is non-powered).

If you don't need 4k/60 or external mic I would just buy the Yi 4k which will save you $150 that you can put towards a gimbal or accessories.

Too bad. Shipping was available this morning. That's the only thing I dislike about Fry's. The inventory which can be shipped appears to be extremely small compared to their in-store inventory so if you don't have Fry's around you locally a lot of deals are hit or miss.

Thanks, I have an older Hero 4 I got on a good sale off Ebay (with a bag full of clips, accessories, and batteries). The hero 4 isn't waterproof without the case so that wasn't an issue as I'm mostly going to do videos of my kid and his friend who is really into dirt bikes (a relatively water-less activity in AZ and if there's mud, slap on the case).

Anyway, the point was I kick myself at times for not just going with the Hero 5 for full waterproof, but I keep seeing the mic is horrid. The Hero 4's mic is serviceable without the case, but to be worse would be useless. Maybe I'm just spoiled by having a real external mic on my Sony (but I wouldn't take it anywhere near dirt bikes unless on a tripod up on the hill or something).

Edit:
Also, the screen is super nice to have on the hero 4. In playing with other action cams without a full screen, it's like stone age and guesswork. I get that it sucks battery, and boy does it, but if you use it to review and frame stuff initially, your battery hit is limited and I find I'm not frustrated.

Yeah, the audio on the Hero 5 is worse than the 4. The waterproof design + covering mic slot design of the case makes it absolutely horrible. You can get the GoPro adapter for $50 but then you're not waterproof anymore since it uses the USB-C connection.

What screen are you referring to on the GP4? The touchscreen? The 4k's have the touchscreen on the back, but they don't have the little monitor lcd on the front. I never use that anyways. I connect to the Yi app and monitor/align everything from there. I actually never really use the rear LCD either now that I think about it. On my Yi or my GoPro. Phone control is just easier and bigger display.

Does the Yi have an accelerometer and GPS so you can do an overlay like on a GoPro?

I wish I could block frys deals. Never get anything able to be shipped. By the time I get the email with the code its in store only. I've been interested in this camera for a while after using multiple go pros. It seems like a really great alternative at a much better price point

My apologies, I know my regular Hero 4 has the touch display, I didn't know they kept it going forward on the 5. I know the Hero 4 Black didn't have one by default. Hence why I should assume.

I never researched the 5 or 6 much as I didn't wish to pay that.
