Before buying any guidebook I suggest trying your public library or Overdrive first.
When I went to Spain I had 5 travel guides loaded on my phone via my Overdrive account. I'm going to Rome this week, and have 3 guides on my phone for this trip. The best part (aside from being free) is I don't even have to worry about returning them. They just automatically get removed from my library when the loan is expired.

Loan less than $1? It's a digital library book...

Is your loan less than $1? If not then your point is invalid in this thread. But in general it's a good advice if you're not planning on going back to these countries anytime soon.

$1 for a copy of Yelp and Wikipedia without any real-time updates? This would be fantastic if it was 2003.

Yelp isn't used much in Australia

Some people like having offline access so they can read it anywhere, like on the 14hr trip to Australia

Wikipedia is very useful. I'm a supporter and donate each year.

I would still use a guidebook when traveling. It's just convenient to have offline access.
