The main purpose of these is that they're packable. So everything's pretty much just a sheet of material. Nothing fancy. Not ideal to be used as your normal bag, but very useful to have in your luggage as emergency/flexible expansion. I bring this and 1 checked bag on my trip. I fill the bag with laundry on return, and main luggage with more fragile souvenoirs. Worked well for this use case.

Fyi the bottom isn't hard/solid/flat. I have the 40L and unless what you are putting in it is clothing or under 5-10 pounds the bottom will sag and it's a pain to carry

In a pinch and for a short distance maybe... but based on the quality of the material for the 20L pack I wouldn't bet on it surviving a lot of weight. It's pretty thin and the straps aren't stitched on in a heavy duty way.

We have one for every person in the family - 5 of us. Two adults, three kids ages 5, 4, and 18 months. We travel 12 hours one way to see family multiple times a year and these are how we pack it all in to get there and get back. Take only what goes in and they pack incredibly well.

Is the 40L or 45L a better choice as a gym bag?

If it's just a gym bag for a towel and change of clothes, the 40 will work just fine

This AE bag was on sale for $5 but no free shipping, so I missed it.

I have this one for the same price but it's bigger and has a shoe compartment. I'm pretty hard on duffel bags and was skeptical since this one is pretty thin but the material has turned out to be very strong and the stitching has held up well. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01KZN2L7G/
