Looks interesting. I don't know anything about these. I'm used to the normal Weller and Hakko deals that show up. (and sometimes cheap non-regulated ones, since my deal alert is just for "Soldering"). Now that I've bought some new things I should probably turn off my deal alert, but this thing looks tempting.

I wouldn't normally think of "Gearbest" to buy stuff like this, but I guess they pretty-much market anything and I guess they're OK. Should I buy one of these? (serious question!)

[edit: I see it will also help me "achieve real intelligence" which would definitely be a deal. and much cheaper than those dollars wasted on the university....]

I have an identical looking unit [sainsmart.com] from SainSmart (paid $65).

In general, I like it, heats up fast, good temperature control. I've found that I do have to turn the temperature up close to the limit to remove components when doing repairs (most recent was some blown caps on an amplifier).

I bought it with the B2 tip, but probably should have gotten something more like BC2 or D24 for better heat transfer.

The big deal about this iron is it can be powered on the go with a LiPo battery. For that reason, it's an Radio Controlled (RC) fan fav.

There is a nice youtube review on the product page. To summarize:

+ It's a nice iron that works as promised and can be configured through a config file.
- Not truly portable, since you still need a laptop power brick or a power bank (usb can't be used for power). There are $5 irons of the same size that can be powered by much more common usb (but maybe not adjustable).
- Bad ergonomics - the most comfortable way to hold it with displays and buttons under your fingers.
- There tip is too long and does not have a finger stop, so you will keep sliding down the metal base. The base is not very hot, but still.
- There is no cover for the tip. You will have to keep on the table until it cools down.
- The tips are expensive.

In other words this works as a great secondary tool that you would use when you don't feel like hauling your main soldering station to a different table.

Remember, this is from Gearbest though. The merchant that's losing orders left and right, with people still waiting since November in the other thread. And if you didn't use paypal, your chance of getting a refund are virtually nil. Oh, and they lost our data in the breach.

Beware. If you have to go Chinese direct, try Banggood. Bad customer support too, but they don't screw up as many orders.
