Can something be done about the Fakespot posts?

5,374 1,989 January 26, 2018 at 05:26 PM
Fakespot fools have been littering Amazon deal threads for over a year now. All they do is spam deal threads with a grade and nothing else. Sometimes, they will post in gigantic red lettered font. Fakespot is pointless. It says nothing about the product. Like whether it works or not. The pro and cons of it. Is there something SD can do to curb this situation?

Perhaps that's why almost every Amazon thread sold by a 3rd party merchant has a fakespot post. Some users don't want others getting ripped off.

Yes, these are basically paid ads that invade SD every morning.
  • This companies often manipulate item titles using the names of the brands they are ripping off [amazon.com].
  • They pay for fake reviews and are aware of the filters amazon uses to delete obviously fake reviews. They are also becoming more and more aware of how to get reviews to pass FakeSpot's tests as well.
  • They pay for seller ratings to get to 1000+ ratings needed to have their posts say up on SD.
  • They pay SD members with high rep to post their deals on SD.
  • SD staff often promote these third party deals to the FP. Some SD staff post these deals themselves.

While we cannot stop shady merchants from reaching out to our established members (often via other shady sites)... we have tried to add rules to help keep the bulk of spammy deals off the site.

We do insist upon the 1K threshold. If we increase it they would/could find ways to reach those marks.
Some SD members were upset that by adding the 1K rule we cut off some legit geed 3rd party deals like xx for $1. So to try and work with that sentiment we added the part about DEs and Staff being allowed to post some deals from merchants who had under 1K reviews once they have been vetted.

We appreciate when members turn in merchants who try to pay for posting, voting and commenting on their deals.

It's hard to make everyone happy and as always... it is best to do your homework before buying anything.

And we do listen to members. We're all here to help each other get in on great deals and save money.

How does a merchant for a deal like this get vetted with so few ratings and such a low Fakespot? DE posting these third party Amazon deals are just as much of a part of the problem as ordinary users who are being compensated for the posts.

At the time of this post, 10 of last 15 deals posted in HD are this type of third party spam and there is no way to filter them without also filtering out legit items that are sold by Amazon.com itself.

For 3rd party merchants with under 1K reviews?

If you have concerns that a thread is shilled or doesn't meet the 1K requirements please mod alert it so the mods can investigate.

As to DEs and Staff vetting they have several criteria.. as well as making sure the merchant knows that the merch knows our rules and consequences of shilling.

It is very disappointing to see posts from two other members that hijacked my thread were responded to in detail while mine was left to rot. If SD is in favor of fakespot and see there is nothing wrong with it then please at least say so instead of just ignoring it. I'm a big boy and I will deal with it.

I don't care about the 3rd party Amazon sellers deals on SD. I never have a problem with it and I can easily ignore deals that I'm not interested in. I'm also not a reseller that are combing through SD looking for things to buy for resell. I care about the fakespot posts that litter all over Amazon threads. It is extremely annoying and it is my wish something can be done about it.

I really don't appreciate what is happening here.

Hi,
My apologies. We are a community driven site. The comments from the members who found this thread pointed out the reason why so many others post fakespot ratings.
We do not endorse fakespot as an unbiased rating system but many members do use it to validate or dispute the quality of the 3rd party's Amazon reviews and by showing it it is one more tool that some members chose to use while vetting the deal.

Our site model is to allow members to vet and rate threads/deals and share their input with each other on the deals in the threads.
If you are noticing the same members posting the fakespot comments in many of the Amazon deals and you don't want to see those anymore you may put the members on ignore.
