Great deal if you need a license. You can get free copies of this if you buy an X-Arcade joystick but if you build your own systems this is a great piece of software.

-------------------------------
Maximus Arcade is Windows-based software that allows you to relive thousands of classic games and creates seamless interaction with multiple arcade and console emulators while keeping the Windows environment hidden. Although best suited for use in computer-based arcade cabinets, it can be configured for use in a kiosk or simply running on a computer with a keyboard, trackball, or arcade joystick. It is widely-considered the easiest software for reliving classic games with emulators like MAME.

I would use RetroPie. The software is free and the hardware to run it is significantly cheaper, quieter, and cooler.

Retropie is for raspberry pi's. This is for PC. This plays more games faster. Currently the pi 3 (fastest pi to date) cant handle N64 very well. Systems beyond N64 aren't doable at all.

Total noob question here but, I have a capable machine. Is this a pretty simple, foolproof deal to set up and use with my htpc for 2-4 players if I got the controllers to do so? Be gentle.

I know your post is a little older, but this deal is still active. This is just a front end so you have to download and buy a key then download roms, Then organize them download an emulator. Then tell the arcade where everything is.

At least with Launchbox it will show you the emulator to download and give you the link to it. Launchbox will also organize your roms for you with a handy importer as well as grab artwork by itself.
