Amazon has the Pioneer Elite VSX-LX302 receiver for $496.51 through Amazon directly or $479 through reseller Stereo Advantage.

That's over $200 off list price of $700 and $100 less than other major retailers right now.
Shipping is free.

This is the lowest price on Amazon since the product was released last June per CamelCamelCamel

Thanks for the recommendation. In my case I cannot go with the SC-LX501 because it's about 1" longer and a little taller so would not fit in my media cabinet.

My old receiver is a Pioneer as well and I like the new Pioneer Remote iPhone app for the LX302 a lot better than the older iControl app, which is also used for the LX501 (the newer LX502 uses Pioneer Remote app).

For some it may be worth noting the LX501 also 'only' has 3 HDCP 2.2 compliant ports. In forums, owners of the LX501 also mentioned issues with bass in modes other than "Pure Direct", but I suppose every receiver is going to have its quirks.

The LX501 should have a better/more robust internal amp and power supply
Hence the weight and size difference you pointed out
It also has a different DSP chip which in theory should make it sound better
